'On A Desert Island'

The 'what if'-question that has beguiled humanity since Robinson Crusoe: What if you, for one reason or another, were to be banished to a desert island and could only bring one book, one record and one film - what would they be?
In the first edition of this column, ARTES director Christian Noack sheds light on his choices.
Book: "That’s obviously the most difficult choice. Bringing an e-book reader is no option, I guess – or does the island have electricity? So I’d go for a novel that I haven’t read yet, by an author that I know I cannot fail with. Joseph Conrad, perhaps?"
Record: "A no brainer: Any of the eight records J.J. Cale made in the seventies or early eighties would do. I am periodically digging them out and listen to them time and again. Extremely relaxed stuff. That cannot be wrong if you’re alone on that desert island."
Film: "Yeelen ("the Light"), a 1987 film from Mali. A coming-of-age story set in the lights and landscape of Western Africa. With a plot partly fantastic, partly reminiscent of ancient Greek myths. It blew me off when I first saw it as strange and at the same attractive. Possibly I feel some affinity for Yeelen’s visual language because the director, Souleymane Cissé, had studied with Soviet filmmakers in the 1960s. Be that as it may, it is shown very rarely these days and I expect to see loads of new things every time I watch it on the desert island.

ARTES Day 2016

It has been some time since the first ARTES day, but it is never too late to share a picture of this event. Held on February 12 in the somewhat chilly but historically appropriate atmosphere of Huize Frankendael's former coach-house, the event can without hesitation be deemed a great success. Next to in-depth discussions on the research school's performance and future prospects the day offered the perfect occasion to get acquainted, not only with current research projects carried by ARTES-members, but also with our new CEDLA-colleagues who presented an insightful oversight of their multi-faceted activities. In conclusion, the PhD-community contributed via ironic introductions about each other's work: a performance that did not exactly reach the level of the likes of Monty Python, but that did succeed in putting a few smiles on a few faces.
Views and opinions expressed in the newsletter do not necessarily reflect those of ARTES.
