Competition Time

The first weekend Medal of the year takes place next Saturday 7th May. The Spring Meeting (Lombard Trophy), effectively signals the start to the summer season, and the day will also be the 1st Qualifying Round for the Stenhouse Cup.

The entry sheet is open on-line, or via the Pro Shop, with plenty of tee times available, especially in the afternoon. Can we remind all players that they must “sign in” on the clubhouse computer prior to starting play. Signing in is a simple swipe of your loyalty card at the touchscreen where you record your scores.

Anyone starting a medal but failing to return a card, even if it is a NR, may be disqualified from the next Medal competition. Failure to complete the competition doesn't just affect your own handicap, it may have an impact on the Competition Scratch Score on that particular day and therefore affect everyone playing in the medal.

Congratulation goes to the following winning players, in our latest midweek Medal competitions.

  • Tuesday 19th- Gary Moreland  (66)
  • Tuesday 26th - Henry Stevenson (68)

Crow Wood Junior Team

The next junior fixture at home, is against Mount Ellen on Sunday 29th May. Any junior members in possession of a handicap, interested in representing the club, should contact Michael McCormick, or Margaret in the office, highlighting their interest. This is a terrific way, not only to improve your competitive golf, but also to meet new people, and experience other courses.

Social Event - Rules Night

Don’t forget tomorrow nights social evening (Friday 29th) from 7pm. The Rules Night will take a lighthearted look at the rules of golf, including numerous televised incidents and situations that are unique to our course. By the end of the evening everyone should have the confidence to lift a Rule Book when needed, and have learned the tricks of the trade in finding the answer you need.
This is a free event so please just turn up and enjoy.

And if that wasn't enough, tickets are still available for Stars in their Eyes on Saturday 7th May.
Tickets are priced at £12.50 for David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Mick Hucknell, Rod Stewart and many more, and includes a buffet and DJ thrown in for good measure. Don't hang around as this is one of the most popular events in our calendar!

House Convenor

As reported last week, one of our members Ted Dalbeck was kindly providing bins and hole signs around the course to tremendous effect. In addition to this, Ted is also replacing the Reserved Car parking signs for certain club office bearers, to which again we thank him.

White lines are currently being re-instated, so can we ask all members to please allow the hard working committee members this one privilege they receive, as a reward for the time they spend running your club, by not parking in this area unless you are entitled to.

Professionals Day - Change of Date

Please note that the Professionals Day, originally scheduled in the Fixture Card as Sunday 29th May, will be a week later on Sunday 5th June.

And Finally....

This weeks focus is on Ali Graham, a member of the Greenskeeping staff, and a well known face around the club.

Ali originally joined the club 13 years ago, as a Junior, and after leaving school, assisted his brother, Club Pro, Ian, in the shop for around 6 years. He learned various aspects of the game during that period, and it was clear that golf, and Crow Wood was always going to be a big part of his life.

By chance, an opportunity arose within the Club for an apprentice greens keeper, which Ali has now completed successfully. This involved recently achieving a NVQ level 2 Qualification in Sports Turf studies, from the GOSTA Training Centre in Glasgow. An excellent student, Ally has been nominated as Student of the Year in his intake, so this can only bode well for the condition of the course in future years.

He reckons the best part of the job is the variety, as well as being able to work outside, although April hail storms have taken the shine off this a little. The most frustrating part of the job is also weather related, where tasks are started, but can be delayed by rain and soft ground conditions. This usually means some of the more mundane tasks are left to do.

With a current handicap of 1.5, its fair to say Ali knows his way round a golf course, and can count his achievements as being part of the Lanarkshire Boys Team, was part of the Scottish National Teaching Squad and came 3rd in the SGU Under 16 Boys Championship.

Also a keen footballer and tennis player, its hoped Ali will turn his all round sports ability into a valuable long term member of our greens team.
