Summer's nearly here and the thoughts of holidays are looming closer. No doubt your calendars for June are looking quite full already, but Passage would like to alert you to a few more “Save the Dates” that we have planned for the upcoming month.
Besides the final Professionals Networking Evening (before the Summer hiatus) and our regular Parent Support Group meeting, which coincidentally are both scheduled for the beginning and end of the month respectively, Passage also have two unique extra events for you to pencil in.
First off, we are hosting another of our “Keeping History Alive” evening seminars with our special guest speaker from the UK, Steven Frank, a Holocaust survivor from the Czech Thereienstadt Concentration Camp. We are very proud, that he has agreed to speak at our event. This is a unique opportunity to hear firsthand, Steven's personal story of survival, despair, ingenuity and ultimate hope. Please don't miss this occasion to capture a piece of World history, albeit awful in context, but overwhelming powerful and reflective in spirit. More details for this seminar planned for Tuesday 7th June are shown below.
The second event is our Passage ‘Ohana’ Family Picnic happening on the Sunday 12th June. “Ohana” means family in Hawaiian culture, but for many of us here in Luxembourg, that meaning can take on several forms. Be it your own domestic units or the broader community in general, but having a comforting sense of ‘family’ in your new adopted country is ultimately what settles you and makes it home.
This is intended to be a cosy get-together with family and friends in the great outdoors, so bring a picnic, (several) rugs or blankets and some essential sunshine on the day!

Finally may we remind you that you can also support Passage at the annual BLC Car Boot Sale on Saturday 18th June at the Glacis. Lynn and Mei will be there on the day, come rain or shine – preferably the latter – to create awareness for Passage and to help raise funds to for all our existing and future projects. Please pop by and say hello and why not buy a few 'treasures' whilst you're there!
Don't forget to check out our Passage website, as we regularly update with relevant blog articles, useful information and topical news. We hope the site continues to be a pertinent 'living resource' for the English-speaking community in Luxembourg, but in order to do so, we would welcome any suggestions or articles that you may wish to share. Please email us with your contribution.
The Passage team would like to wish you all a great Summer ahead and see you all back here in the Autumn.

Don't Miss our “Keeping History Alive” Evening Seminar with Special Guest Steven Frank on Tuesday 7th June!
Great news for all those who missed Steven Frank’s most moving and awe-inspiring talk last year documenting his survival of the Thereienstadt Concentration Camp during the Second World War. Passage are pleased to announce that Steven will be making another appearance in Luxembourg and we are incredibly honoured to have him again as our special guest at the “Keeping History Alive” seminar on the Tuesday 7th June at 7pm.
Steven will share his incredible story and will also highlight his involvement in a project to preserve history for The National Holocaust Centre and Museum, whereby future generations can interact and hear from holograms of Holocaust survivors telling their stories in the first person.
Parents and Secondary school-aged children (12 years+) are invited to share in this unmissable event. Please email Passage if you would like to reserve a place for the seminar. Entrance is free, but donations will be most welcome to cover the cost of refreshments and to further support the work of Passage.
The Venue: St. George’s International School
(Barthel Hall in the Secondary School Building),
11 rue des Peupliers, L-2328 Hamm, Luxembourg.

Parenting Seminar at the European School Luxembourg (Mamer Site)
Tuesday 31st May, starts 7.00pm
Language acquisition and language learning in a multi-lingual context
Guest Speaker: Dr. Constance Weth
Language acquisition in a multilingual context is the rule rather than the exception. However, much of the current discourse on multilingualism in education is ambivalent. On the one hand, multilingualism is perceived as an important value and a policy goal in the EU. This is the case when languages are promoted through the formal educational curriculum. This talk will summarise what we already know about language acquisition, especially about language acquisition in a multilingual context. It will then show that learners of a second (or third) language do not only learn a language but more precisely a set of linguistic registers that construct multiple meanings at all levels of communication and in all subjects of schooling.
This conference is part of a collaboration between the two European Schools Luxembourg and their respective Parents’ Associations, but parents from all other schools in Luxembourg are invited to attend too. The talk will be in English, but participants can ask their questions in the language of their choice (EN/FR/DE).
Venue: Primary Canteen, Administration Building,
European School Luxembourg II (Mamer),
6 rue Gaston Thorn, L-8268 Bertrange, Luxembourg

Five well respected Luxembourg-based mental health professionals will facilitate this year’s closing ISL parent seminar. The questions will be anonymously shared to the panelists, who will then contribute helpful/proven strategies in dealing with a range of challenges/issues that children face.

Join Us at our First “Ohana” Family Picnic on Sunday 12th June at Merl Park from 2pm-6pm
The Passage team never need an excuse to celebrate... but we will be celebrating the concept of family at our first “Ohana” Family Picnic and we would love to invite you all to join us for a leisurely day outdoors! It'll be a chance to connect with our own families, the community as a whole and the beautiful environment around us.
The day we envision may be relaxed and informal, but we will also be welcoming Sariah Ann Howard from Hawaii, who will be introducing her “Cloud Tales” concept to everyone. She'll hopefully be bringing along some amazing weather with her too and getting everyone to ignite their imaginations deciphering the skies above. Continuing the theme, the day will also feature some Rainbow Family Yoga fun with Lynn, who will get everyone to create a ‘giant magic carpet’ and have them reach for the clouds!
So bring your family and friends, a picnic, extra blankets, sun protection and your boundless imagination to the park. Spread the news and we hope to see many of you there... all together like one big happy family!
The Venue: Parc Merl-Belair, Luxembourg
(green near the cafe and childrens's playground).
NB: Fingers crossed that we are blessed with sunny conditions on the day – but bearing in mind, it is Summer in Luxembourg! – then please be warned that the “Ohana” Family Picnic may be cancelled in the event of any forecast rain or incremental weather. You can keep checking our PassageParents twitter feed for all the latest updates for this and all our upcoming events.

Advance Notice of a NEW Passage Parenting Course
for the Autumn
The ‘Time Out’ course is designed to give parents the opportunity to build stronger relationships with their children whatever the age. We start this journey by exploring what children really need at each developmental stage, practicing positive parenting skills and sharing ideas with other parents. We examine the vital subject of setting boundaries – why children need them, why they can be hard to set and carry through, and how our parenting style affects our children’s response. We recognise the value of routines, praise and consistency, and explore a toolkit of discipline strategies for different ages and different issues. The topics of unsupervised play, TV and internet safety, bullying and talking about sex are tackled next. In the final session, there’s a chance to review the course and practice using problem-solving skills. This course is targeted at any parent who did not receive a ‘how it works’ instruction manual with their baby at birth.
The "Time Out for Parents" course was designed by Care for the Family (UK) and will be led by Lynn Frank, a licensed facilitator and Passage coordinator. It takes place over 6 sessions starting in the Autumn. If you would like to reserve an early place on the course or if you simply want to learn more, then please contact us at: passage.parents@gmail.com.
