MAYbe it's time next month for you to read or chant from our 50th Anniversary Torah at a Shabbat morning service?  Or, perhaps you've done so, but it's been awhile since you've visited the bimah?  Not only will you feel personally fulfilled by doing so, but you will be performing a wonderful mitzvah for your CBH community!  This is especially true while Rabbi Greg is on sabbatical through late July.  Click here to see the available portions beginning Saturday, May 7.

Community Potluck Passover Seder Enjoyed by 90!

 It was "chai five" for a Chag Sameach at this year's annual holiday celebration in the Social Hall.  Music, flowers and tasty food all came together, thanks to the leadership of Sandy Jones and the contributions of time and talent of many other CBH partners, as well.  Rabbi Seth Castleman led participants in both traditional seder rituals and inspiring and thought-provoking discussion.  Next year in Jerusalem...but Davis is a close second!
CBH History Fact of the Month
 
In a new tradition started at the end of March, the Weekly e-tone now features a fun fact once a month from Bet Haverim's nearly 55 years of history.  The goal is to help all partners to feel more connected to and excited about the past, present and future of our synagogue!  
 
This month's fact:  the dedication of the Jewish Fellowship of Davis' (now Congregation Bet Haverim) first building at 1821 Oak Avenue, Davis, took place on Monday, September 4, 1972.  By coincidence, this preceded the shocking murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the Summer Olympic games in Munich by just one day.   It's also interesting to note that, in 1972:
  • CBH membership dues tripled...from $20 to $60 per year
  • Of the $60 per member, $20 was allocated to operating expenses, $10 was a Religious School subsidy & $30 was for capital improvements
  • The operating budget was $1,200 per year.  The Religious School budget was $4,600/year.  Today, the Bet Haverim operating budget (inclusive of Religious School) is close to $1 million per year

Don't Forget to Attend the CBH Annual Meeting

Make plans to be a part of CBH's leadership and fiscal future by attending and participating.  Board members will be elected by the community, and the budget for the 2016-2017 year (beginning July 1) will be approved.  This also is a key time for you to meet and connect with the synagogue leadership and ask questions.

Yom Hashoah program for grades 6 and 7
 
 Also, a reminder that the Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes are asking for support for their mitzvah projects to aid animals: 
  • Donations for pets collection box available in the CBH office.  The wish list includes leashes, collars, litter boxes and scoopers, crates, dog and cat beds, cat trees, dog/cat and puppy/kitten food (Nutro or Iam's), as well as gift cards for Petco and Davis Ace.
  • Dog treats will be baked and sold by the classes at the "May Day for Mutts," festival, hosted by the Yolo County SPCA THIS SUNDAY, May 1.  See flyer for more details.

Davis Reform Temple Youth (DRTY)
Pizza and Marshmallow Roast, THIS SUNDAY, May 1, 4:40 - 7:20 p.m.

Youth in 8th - 12th grades are invited to hang out, eat and enjoy an outdoor evening together at the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve on the UC Davis campus.  Meet in and return to the CBH parking lot via car pool.  Bring a skewer or stick if you have one to use at the campfire!

Year-End BBQ Pool Party, Sunday, May 22, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Celebrate friendship, Summer and the year ahead at President Ethan Liederman's home!  In addition to swimming and noshing, elections will be held for the 2016-2017 DRTY Board.  Previous DRTY involvement is not a requirement to run for a positon.

2016 Summer Camperships
Deadline to Apply TODAY, THURSDAY, April 28

One of the most powerful Jewish experiences a young person can have is to spend part of a summer at a Jewish camp.  Jewish camp creates a positive sense of identity and wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.  Here at CBH, we are proud that our Campership Fund has helped so many of our youth attend URJ Camp Newman, our regional reform Jewish camp, over the years.  

Planning to send your child to URJ Camp Newman this Summer?  Fee assistance may be available!  To apply for a campership, please click here to access the form.  Applications must be received in the CBH office TODAY by 5:00 p.m., or they may be emailed to cbhoffice2@gmail.com.  All applications will be handled in confidence.

Food Drive Ends TOMORROW, Friday, April 29!  
The annual Israel Matters Chanukah to Passover Food Drive to benefit the Short Term Emergency Aid Committee (STEAC), as of March 31, has collected 450 pounds of food toward the 700 pound goal. You can help to fill the gap!  Please consider donating canned or boxed food.  Collection bins are located in the CBH office and in the sanctuary, or contact gmrooks3@gmail.com to arrange for a donation pick up.

Israel Independence Day Annual Celebration

Don't miss this event, now a CBH tradition, raising awareness of our connection to the culture and people of Israel.  Enjoy amazing homemade falafels and Israeli salads, delicious hot dogs, cotton candy and popcorn.  Children and parents can stay after Sunday School, and look forward to face painting, bounce houses and much more.  All food and activities are free!  Sponsored by the Israel Matters Committee. "The Holocaust:  Coming of Age"  
Communitywide Yom HaShoah Commemoration
 
6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Mosaic Law Congregation,
2300 Sierra Boulevard, Sacramento
 
Two women will share the powerful stories of their own mothers' Holocaust experiences aboard the Kindertransport, and survival of the Krakow Ghetto and several camps.  The participants are:
  • Michele Gold, author of Memories That Won't Go Away: A Tribute to the Children of the Kindertransport, and educator at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust 
  • Tamara Theodore, a Sacramento resident.
The commemoration begins with a candlelight procession. ChaverSangha Meditation and Spiritual Practice

An opportunity to learn about the counting of the omer will pair with guided meditation, under the leadership of group organizer Michael Amster.  Michael is a CBH partner.  

ChaverSangha is a meditation and spiritual practice group with an emphasis on Buddhist and Jewish meditation.  The usual meeting schedule is every other Tuesday evening.  All group activities are free and open to the entire community, regardless of religious affiliation or experience with meditation.  First-timers definitely are welcome!  For more information about the group or this week's event, contact Michael at amsterm@gmail.com, or 530-219-6947.

"Hunger at Home" A Mini-Documentary on ChiIdhood Hunger in Davis, CA -
Marley Kubby Adler's Mitzvah Project
10:30 - 11:30 a.m., Varsity Theatre, 616 2nd Street, Davis
 
Recent Bat Mitzvah and 7th grade Religious School class member Marley Kubby Adler is raising funds for Yolo County nonprofits addressing childhood hunger, with a screening of her own 20 minute film, "Hunger at Home."
 
Tickets are just $10 each, and are available here; no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay.  Donations also are welcomed from those unable to attend.  All proceeds will benefit organizations featured in the film, including Yolo Food Bank, Davis Community Meals, Yolo Crisis Nursery and the Davis Joint Unified School District's Nutrition Program.  Representatives of these organizations also will be on hand for questions and discussion following the film.  Opening remarks will be made by Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor, and Marley will provide an introduction to the film.

Have a Ball at CBH's Jewish Heritage Festival Booth!  
Volunteers Are Needed for Two-Hour Shifts, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.,
Raley Field, 400 Ballpark Drive, West Sacramento
 
"Israeli Baseball Trivia" will be the theme of the Bet Haverim booth at this annual festival, organized by the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region.  The event includes activities hosted by other area synagogues and Jewish organizations, all with an emphasis on Israeli culture or history.  Vendors, food and entertainment also will be featured.  To learn more about the festival, click here.

In addition, CBH's own Israel Independence Day celebration, hosted by the Israel Matters Committee, will be held at Bet Haverim on the same day, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.  It's an entire day to kvell about Israel, as CBH partners are encouraged to move between both events!  Click here to view more details about the Israel Matters event.
 
Help is needed at the Raley Field festival with CBH booth set-up and break-down, as well as to assist children and others to play the Israeli Baseball Trivia game and award small prizes.  Shifts are as follows:
  • 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
  • 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Israel Peace Alternatives Presents a Book Discussion:  "Power, Faith and Fantasy:  America in the Middle East, 1776 to Present," by Michael B. Oren

MAY You Find Programs and Events in the Month Ahead! 

In a effort to serve and connect the more than 25,000 Jews of the eight-county Sacramento region, the Federation offers CBH partners an array of monthly programs for young families, senior citizens and the disabled, in particular.  To view a full schedule of activities, please click here. 

In addition to a special Leisure League trip to the Jewish Museum in San Francisco on Tuesday, May 10, and the CBH Booth at the Jewish Heritage Festival on Sunday, May 15, the following Davis-based program may be of particular interest:
 
Caregivers' Support Group at CBH:  spouses, family members and friends who are acting as caregivers for a loved one are invited to participate.  The group provides a warm environment offering support and strategies to address the unique needs and stresses of caregiving.  Facilitated by CBH Partner Jane Zeiger, LCSW.  The current morning session meets twice a month through early August, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.  An evening session may begin again this Fall.  Drop-ins are welcome at $10 per session with advance notice.  For more information, or to RSVP, contact Jewish Family Service Community Social Worker Alicia Mittleman at 916-205-0688.

"Emperor Norton's Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine"

Take a trip back in time, and take peek into the amazing life of the late "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico."

 San Francisco tour guide, writer and historian Joseph Amster will appear in character and costume as "Emperor Norton," born Joshua Abraham Norton, a Jewish man who came to San Francisco in 1849.  After initial success as an investor, Norton went bankrupt, and reinvented himself in 1859 as "Emperor Norton."  As the Emperor, he ate complimentary restaurant meals, enjoyed gratis theater seats, rode public transit for free and even issued his own "Imperial Treasury Bonds" as legal tender.

The e-tone usually is published on Thursdays. Submissions meeting the following criteria will be considered for publication:
  • Reminders about approved CBH programs and events 
  • Meeting notices for CBH groups and committees
  • Religious school and/or CBH youth groups notices 
  • Ritual information (i.e., holiday and Shabbat schedules and details)
  • Updates from CBH clergy
  • News about partners' lifecycle events (b’nai mitzvahs, births, marriages, deaths) 
  • Items from Hillel, the Sacramento Jewish Federation and the URJ may also be included.  
All submissions must include contact information, and may be edited for length, clarity, readability and compliance with CBH editorial style.  The placement and frequency of submissions within the e-tone will be at the discretion of the Communications Specialist and/or the Executive Director.  No item will be included more than four weeks prior to an event/meeting date, although exceptions may be made for CBH fundraisers.
