1) Kumamoto Earthquake Relief
A 7.3 magnitude earthquake on April 16, preceded by a 6.5 earthquake on April 14 led to significant damage, 48 known deaths, and 93,874 people initially staying in 632 evacuation shelters in Kumamoto city (750 miles south of us in Tokyo).
That following Monday, April 18, I joined an initial relief & assessment team of 6 guys from Grace Harbor Church Tokyo and sister church Grace City Church Tokyo. Our primary mission was to deliver a 2-ton truck and a large van - both filled with supplies - 15 hour drive down to Hakata Christ Church in Fukuoka city (65 miles outside Kumamoto city). These vehicles had been used for years of ongoing relief work after the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, and will be useful for ongoing distribution of supplies.
A blown tire while the truck was being picked up from Oyumino Church in Chiba pushed our intended 6am departure back to 1pm, resulting in a 4am arrival time! Thankfully we had a rotation of 3 drivers per vehicle to keep the trip going. It was truly God's providence, though, as we were able to give the truck some needed maintenance and new tires in Tokyo before commissioning it for a new season of relief work down in Kumamoto area.
Local churches in the area were just barely beginning to coordinate and mobilize. Here is a photo of our group of 6 (in the middle) plus a number of local pastors and partners praying and sending us off the next morning as the first official trip of relief supplies sent into Kumamoto city by the newly formed "Kyushu Christian Disaster Relief Center".
