The Peace Palace Library is pleased to invite you to our upcoming Peace and Security Salon on the Wednesday May 11 with biological and chemical weapons as the theme of our evening. The Salon is part of a new lecture series of the Peace Palace Library on peace and security issues. The Salon will include lectures by several experts on the different aspects of biological and chemical weapons. You are most welcome to join us. The deadline for registration is May 2. On Saturday September 24th, the fourth edition of a unique running event will be held: the Peace Run The Hague. In this way the Peace Run The Hague will be part of the annual ‘Peace weekend’. The course of the Peace Run The Hague will be around the Peace Palace. Participants can choose from four distances: Children’s Run 1.5K, Youth Run 2.5K, 5K Run and APM Terminals 10K. The course of the Peace Run will guide you along several historic monuments and sites that provide a unique course.

The Hague Institute of Global of Justice in cooperation with the Roosevelt Foundation organized the first ever ‘Roosevelt in The Hague’ event in the Peace Palace. Every year, the Roosevelt Foundation and the Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Institute award the Four Freedoms Medals to honor world citizens who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the ideals and visions that are represented in the Four Freedoms Speech that was delivered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941. Starting this year, the Roosevelt Foundation has joint forces with The Hague Institute of Global Justice to organize a special event in addition to the award ceremony, to complement the achievements of the Laureates as well as to discuss, engage and develop policy and educational frameworks that will enable key stakeholders to address the Four Freedoms effectively in our modern world.

From Thursday 31 March till Saturday 2 April 2016, Erik de Baedts, director of the Carnegie Foundation and Sophie Brinkel, policy advisor, visited the town of Dunfermline, the birthplace of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The idea of the visit was to learn about the different Carnegie institutions in Dunfermline and to discuss future cooperation.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a bioterrorism attack is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, toxins or other harmful agents used to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants. In both the popular imagination and among lawmakers and national security experts, there exists the belief that with sufficient motivation and material resources, terrorist groups can produce bioweapons easily, cheaply, and successfully. Some scholars disagree. Legal measures offer no guarantee for preventing bioterrorism, but nonetheless affect bioterrorism. What are the legal instruments addressing prevention?

The International Court of Justice was established in 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations as the principal judicial organ (Art. 7, UN Charter). Its role in the fulfillment of the purposes of the UN is “to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace” (Art. 1, UN Charter).
