Welcome to the SpringE

From the Headmistress

It has been a quieter week without Year Five and Six who have been enjoying their residential trip to Osmington Bay. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures as well as the range of diverse weather conditions enjoyed on their field trip to the beach. Thanks must go to Mrs Walker, Mrs Williams and Mr Miller who have been relentlessly tweeting to keep us up to date with all the activities.

As I write, we have just enjoyed a heavy hailstorm at break time which added to the levels of excitement, may I gently remind parents that summer uniform for boys and girls does not have to be worn until summer half term.

Wishing you a restful bank holiday

Kind regards
Laura Brown

RGS Springfield’s TV debut
The School will feature in the programme ‘Put your Money where your Mouth is’ on BBC 1 on Tuesday 3 May at 4.30pm. Dragonflies will star alongside Antique expert Philip Serrell….tell your friends and tune in!

Yo de lay he hoo
The classroom is alive with the sound of music. As part of their science topic, Year Four have been studying sound. They were set a challenge of making a music instrument of any kind. Special mention must go to Mila Humphryes with her tuned 'wine glass harp'.  Well done Year Four.

Modern Nursing
Year Two have been working hard to reflect on wonderful facts Florence Nightingale shared with us. We have worked really hard to think about the changes that have occurred in hospitals and nurses training. We also thought about what we would need to do in an emergency. With our nurse's hats on we worked carefully together to explore some basic first aid facts and had a go at some bandage work.

Musical DOOD
On Wednesday, Marie McNally, one of our woodwind peripatetic music teachers, came in to talk to the children about a range of instruments. She demonstrated a range of sounds including those from Baritone, Alto and Tenor Saxophone as well as Flute and Clarinet. Mrs Mcnally also brought along a new instrument which is aimed at younger children and is a way of getting children started with a lightweight easy to play instrument, as an introduction to any of the woodwind family. This new instrument was called a DOOD and a few children found out how easy it was to play.

Mrs McNally will be offering taster lessons to children interested in playing any of the woodwind instruments and if your child is interested please email Mrs McCabe on emc@rgsw.org.uk

Frogs in the Forest
At Forest School this week the Frogs all sat around the fire pit sensibly, whilst their orange cakes cooked on the fire. Our sound this week was 'o', so the cake mixture was poured into 'orange' peel, wrapped in tin foil and placed on the hot fire. They smelt amazing. Some children also had a chance to toast some marshmallows. What a fantastic Forest School treat.

Creating Dragons
At tonight's meeting the Brownies put the finishing touches to their dragons made to celebrate St George's Day last Saturday.

The Brownies went on to paint a dragon money box.

Rounders Report
Springfield started their rounders season with a trip to The Downs. We were greeted by hail and snow showers on the Malvern Hills but were luckily able to play indoors. Under nine girls played first and were slow to react to the opposition's batting, giving away too many rounders in the field. The final score was 8-3.5 to The Downs. Under eight girls batted with more consistency and were able to score six rounders in total, winning their game by one rounder. We are looking forward to more rounders action next week.
