A SIP OF SCIENCE: How Is the River Changed by Lock Closure?

Aster Café | 125 Main Street SE
Wednesday, May 11, 5:30 – 7 pm

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly. Food, beer and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum that puts science in context through storytelling. This science happy hour is sponsored by the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED) and is a chance to hear about new and exciting research over beer, in a cool bar. Come talk with the experts about their efforts to address some of the Earth's most pressing problems. NCED's A SIP OF SCIENCE brings the wonder of science to happy hour. At this session, the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership will present what they have learned in an LCCMR-funded study about how the river has changed as a result of the closure in early 2015 of the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock. For information on this month’s topic and to RSVP:

Art Exhibit by Lynn Bartley and Sonya Berlovitz

Southeast Library | 1222 4th Street SE
Thursday, May 5 - Tuesday, June 28, 2016

Sonya Berlovitz Statement: “Hand woven together into landscapes of cloth and imagery these pieces signify the fragility by which our lives are woven together, and pay tribute to the handwork that was a significant factor in my upbringing and development as an artist. These collages with a multitude of textures and colors are created with immediacy, spontaneity, and directness suggesting movement, a contrast to the still, lone figure, captured in a moment in time, amidst the emotional and textural complexity of my journey as an artist.”

Lynn Bartley Statement: “We add meaning to our lives as we sift through memories and experiences to find connections and a narrative. What we choose to group together brings context and perspective. As I examine and assemble incongruous bits and pieces, the same process happens. Meanings shift and weave together. Like memories, there are layers and complexity, shadows and unveilings. Construction is purposely oblique and implausible. Objects rest, seemingly unattached. There is a possibility of further developments.”
This event directly supports the exhibitions, library and public programs at Midway Contemporary Art, a non-profit visual arts organization serving the Twin Cities since 2001.

The best tips for any neighborhood are– stay aware of your surroundings; know who your neighbors are; and don’t provide opportunities for criminals. Lock your home, garage and car doors and windows; take valuables out of vehicles; secure your bike to a solid object and use a quality lock; and observe and report any suspicious activity by calling 911 as it happens.

CenterPoint Energy Low Income Rental Efficiency Program

CenterPoint Energy (CNP) now offers an energy conservation program for property owners renting to low income tenants in one-to-four unit dwellings. The program is administered by us- the Energy CENTS Coalition (ECC) and our partner, the Neighborhood Energy Connection (NEC). Together, ECC and NEC have administered energy conservation services for more than 20 years.

The program offers a FREE, no obligation energy audit ($350-$950 value). The auditor determines if insulation levels are inadequate and if mechanical systems are inefficient. If property owners want to act on the auditor’s recommendations, the program requires them to contribute 50% of all costs for any additional insulation or for new, energy-efficient HVAC (furnaces, water heaters, boilers) equipment and CenterPoint will pay the rest.

For more information, contact Brenda Franklin, Conservation Program Coordinator at Energy CENTS Coalition. brenda@energycents.org | 612.991.3155
