Dean's Monthly Message


Wow! My head is spinning! It’s been nonstop since early March with initiatives we have been planning for months. It started March 9-11 with Battlefield Leadership and March 17-18 with the Leadership Symposium, both of which I wrote about in last month’s issue. Then, on March 25 to April 4, I was in Cuba with my students. On March 5, I collected another group of cadets from our Finance Club and flew to Chicago to meet Professor Iordanis Karagiannidis for a two-day networking trip.

The Citadel Directors' Institute Attracts Leaders from Across the Region

More than 50 regional business leaders attended this year’s Citadel Directors’ Institute.  Dan Cathy, Chairman and CEO of Chick-Fil-A, was the keynote speaker. Congressman Reid Ribble (R-WI 8th District) served as the event’s opening speaker.

Bulldog Business Bowl Winners are Announced

SC Tax Relief, headed by Gray Turner, is the first place winner of the 2016 Bulldog Business Bowl. The property-tax relief consulting firm received $10,000 in seed money. In addition to the cash prize, the first place team also won one year of office space at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Catalyst Center.  Second place was awarded to Little Rock Pharmacy & Medical Therapy, a collaborative therapy drug management consulting firm.

Advisory Board Meeting



The School of Business Advisory Board welcomed its newest members at its April 21 meeting. The School of Business is grateful to the men and women who donate their time and experience to further the mission of The Citadel School of Business.

  • Every semester, cadet business students who are enrolled in BADM 422, Strategic Management, compete as teams in a business simulation where each team is responsible for running a firm. The teams must develop a strategy, plan product development, invest in R&D, decide how to market the products, balance production facilities to market demand, and finance all aspects of running the business. During the semester, these students compete with other undergraduate programs’ teams performances who also use the simulation program. Of the 689 teams from around the world, one of The Citadel’s business teams scored in the top decile of all teams. Those students are:
    • Nicholas Alford
    • Stephen Byrd
    • George Carson
    • Alex Gardiner
    • Douglas Wright
  • Dr. Richard Ebling was quoted in the article, "Expect crisis prep rally, not Fed pep rally at Las Colinas conference", in the Dallas Morning News
  • Congratulations to those cadets who received an honor at the Pi Sigma Epsilon convention. Mason Garrett placed in the Top 25 in the National Pro-Am Sell-a-Thon. Chris Proveaux received an honorable mention in the National Speaking Challenge.
  • Dr. Tim Keogh will participate in panel called “Physicians in Management: Communication" at the Louisiana Hospital Association on April 19. On April 23, he will present a Leadership Communication session at the Nebraska Hospital Association’s Physician Leadership Development Conference in Lincoln. 
  • Dr. Don Sparks’ publication “The Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063: Implications for Economic Integration in Africa” has been accepted at the Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal.
  • Dr. Russ Sobel’s paper “Social and Economic Impacts of Gambling” has been accepted at Current Addiction Reports.
  • Dr. Liz Arnold's manuscript entitled "US GAAP Conversion To IFRAS: A Case Study of the Balance Sheet" has been downloaded 3,752 times since its publication in Journal of Business Case Studies.
  • Cadet Wilson Wicker is a recipient of a Palmetto Scholarship from the the South Carolina Bankers Association's Young Bankers Division Board of Directors.
  • Professor Cindy Bolt's recent publication, “Uncovering Majority Shareholder Fraud in a Closely Held Corporation,” which has been accepted and is forthcoming in The Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting
