May 2016 FAHU Newsletter
Wow, it is already May!  It seems like the older I get, the faster the calendar turns.  We are once again in the season of high school proms, graduations, Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby, Memorial Day, and then summer family vacations. Most importantly, let's remember to honor the most important ladies in our lives on Mothers Day (May 8)!

As the weather turns warmer, our natural inclination is to relax and go into summertime mode.  FAHU has accomplished a lot this year, but we are not done yet. Our FAHU board meeting, election of 2016 - 2017 officers and strategic planning session will be held on May 6.  The NAHU Convention in Albuquerque is right around the corner (June 26 - 29). We are also in "pedal to the metal" mode for our annual FAHU Symposium and Expo (July 28 - 30).  This is going to be an awesome experience, as our Symposium Committee has been working on the program for almost a year now.  Best sure to have this on your calendar; you don't want to miss it!

Office Statement on the Appointment of Florida’s New Insurance Commissioner

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Financial Services Commission appointed David Altmaier as the new Insurance Commissioner for the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Mr. Altmaier will succeed Kevin M. McCarty, who has served as the incumbent in this position since 2003.

Mr. Altmaier has been an employee of the Office since 2008 and most recently served as Deputy Commissioner for Property and Casualty Insurance. In this role, he provided regulatory, legislative, and policy support to the Insurance Commissioner, while also overseeing the Product Review and Financial Oversight business units. During his time with the Office, Mr. Altmaier has held various roles within the property and casualty business unit to include Chief Analyst and as Director of Property & Casualty Financial Oversight.

On a national level, Mr. Altmaier is well respected for his participation with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), where he is Chair of the Capital Adequacy Task Force, Creditor-Placed Insurance Model Act Review Working Group, and Group Calculation Working Group.

“I am so proud of David’s appointment today and of Belinda Miller, Rich Robleto, and Eric Johnson, who also interviewed for this position and demonstrated the depth and breadth of knowledge at the Office,” stated Florida’s Insurance Commissioner, Kevin M. McCarty. “Florida’s insurance consumers will be in good hands under David’s thoughtful and patient leadership and he will have the benefit of an exceptional team of individuals to assist him.”

“I am humbled by the support of the Financial Services Commission and look forward to serving the insurance consumers of Florida,” stated incoming Insurance Commissioner, David Altmaier.

It's Awards Time!

It's time to start thinking of that special member who goes above and beyond to help make your chapter successful.  We will look forward to celebrating these members at our Annual Symposium in July.  Please refer to the FAHU website for the list of awards that will be given out to these well deserved recipients and don't forget to be with us at Symposium to celebrate these members together. Two new awards will be given out this year.  One to honor Scott Robertson, which will be an award for legislative excellence and the other to honor Jim Burkett, and will focus on excellence in CE.  As you know these two contributed greatly to our Association and it is a privilege to honor them with awards of excellence in their names.

NAHU's Award Program

From your Region V Awards Chair, Vicky Major-Bell

The new awards year has started as of May 1, 2016. We have very exciting news to make awards easier to compile. All awards will be done online for 2017. Hopefully by July 1 you will be able to upload all of your criteria directly, once a month into the awards folder, no more searching for everything at the last minute. You will only need to enter what is asked for, not hundreds of pages of documentation. We are hoping we can even use a hyperlink for this, in some cases. So start now keeping your monthly documents and when the online program for Pacesetter and Landmark launches you will be ready to see how easy this will make it! Watch for more information to come!

NAHU’s Anti-trust Statement: Associations are subject to strict scrutiny under antitrust laws because an association is, by its nature, a group of competitors joined together for a common business purpose. The antitrust laws require companies to make certain decisions by themselves, not in conjunction with competitors. Therefore, associations and their members must proceed with extreme caution in certain areas of activity to insure against violation of the antitrust laws. Discussions of current or future prices or commissions and refusing to deal with or boycotting any insurance carrier are among a number of areas specifically prohibited by the anti-trust laws and will not be permitted in today’s meeting.
