Developments In Development

This has been a fantastic year in CWS Development!

Thank you to all who gave your precious time and money to support our school: we met our annual fundraising goal!

Planning is soon underway for TWILIGHT DINNER and GALA.

Contact Kirsten Roberts at krflowers66@gmail.com or Naimah Bilal at bnaimah@gmail.com.

Look for the return of our CWS ANNUAL REPORT, now in progress!

GALA SURVEY: Please take 5 minutes to complete our online survey about this year’s Gala. Whether or not you attended the Gala, we want your feedback and ideas. Thank you to those who have already completed the survey! Your answers are already helping us.

I have been honored to serve as CWS Development Director. As this year rounds the corner toward next year’s planning, please accept my personal gratitude to our faculty, students, parents and grandfriends.

Please welcome Naimah Bilal, our incoming Development Director, and mother of preschooler Araba!

It's not too late to sign up your campers for a week of fun in nature

Check out all the great camps we have to offer this summer HERE and sign your child up for a week of fun with their friends exploring nature, music and more!

Student Musicians Needed at May Faire!

It's almost time for May Faire! And one of the biggest activities at May Faire is the Cake Walk!  We are asking for any student volunteers to play music for our festive Cake Walk this year.  It's a great way to get your student involved in the fun (and they can use the minutes toward their weekly strings homework)!

We are hoping to get a mix of students from all the upper grades to play and are asking children to commit to a 15 minute block (or more if they would like) and bring their instrument to the event. They can also play with a friend or two! The Cake Walk starts at 12:00 and will likely continue until 2:00 - we will go until we run out of baked goods.

If your child is interested, please let us know by emailing Tiffany at tiffhoof@msn.com and we'll assign them a time slot based on your preference!

Craft Guild

Yes!  Craft Guild is still meeting every Thursday after drop off in the community room.  We are working on a beautiful nature mandala for May Faire.  Come join us!  All experience levels welcome.

Community Sing

Every Friday morning just after drop off, April Mann and Adam Petersen will be leading community singing in the community room from 8:15-8:45! Join them and learn our school's songs!

Chess Club

Chess Club meets every Monday from 3pm-4:30pm with Professor Petersen and is open to students in grades 3-8. Cost is $25 per month and you can sign up at the beginning of each month.   Forms are available in the office!  Contact Alex for more details: ap112504@ohio.edu

Knitting Club

Knitting Club meets every Tuesday from 3pm-4:30pm with Ms. Oudomsouk and is open to students in grades 3-8. Cost is $25 per month and you can sign up at the beginning of each month.   Forms are available in the office! Contact Emily for more information: emilyoudomsouk@gmail.com

8th Grader in the News

Time to Renew your Kroger Community Rewards!

Did you know that you can donate money to our school through your Kroger Plus card? You can earn those awesome fuel points AND give money to CWS at the same time! And our enrollment is up this year, so we've been earning quarterly donations from Kroger. We so appreciate the money that is donated to our school each time you shop at Kroger and use your Kroger Plus card! Thank you to everyone for participating!

Please log into your Kroger account at www.kroger.com and select Cincinnati Waldorf School as your community rewards recipient. We must do this each April when Kroger resets their system. If you have any questions on how to do this, please contact Tiffany Dickerhoof at tiffhoof@msn.com or visit her on Friday mornings at the main campus near the community room. She can walk you through this quick and easy process!

Shop with Scrip with Spring! Over $3,200 raised since September!
Spring is in the air….. And if you are like me, that often means new clothes and shoes for the kids, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts, and gifts for upcoming college or high school graduates. It’s a busy time, but the CWS Scrip Gift Card Program can make it easy for you to tackle your to-do list AND earn money for our beloved school.

What is the Scrip Program?

Quite simply, you purchase gift cards through the CWS Scrip program and a percentage of each gift card is donated back to our school. So, money that you would already be spending can benefit CWS in a big way! We have raised over $3,200 this year alone!

Why use the Scrip Program?

We all have things we have to purchase… My kids grow out of coats, shoes, clothes and boots so quickly! We all need gas for our cars, groceries for our table, materials for home improvement, tickets for travel, etc. Not to mention all the fun spring celebrations like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and graduations. Why not buy a gift card for those have to purchase items and give back to CWS at the same time?

How do I order gift cards?

You can order via the order form (available in the front office) or by signing up on www.shopwithscrip.com.  Please email Tiffany Dickerhoof at tiffhoof@msn.com for enrollment instructions!

Give back to CWS by shopping on Amazon Smile!

Just like Kroger Community Rewards, you can earn money for CWS by shopping with Amazon Smile!  It's super easy - just go to smile.amazon.com and log into your amazon account. Under your account, you can select your charity (Cincinnati Waldorf School) and every time you shop at Amazon Smile, our school earns a donation! Again, we so appreciate the money that is donated to our school each time you shop at Amazon Smile - thank you to everyone for participating! Please email Tiffany at tiffhoof@msn.com with any questions!

This is CWS!
What Our Classes Are Doing Now
Woodland Preschool ~ The Woodland Preschool children have been fulling enjoying our magnificent outdoor environment.  In the forest the woodland flowers are in full bloom; trout lilies, yellow, white and purple violets, Mayapples and Jack-in-the -pulpit are just a few of the many flowers that we see on our daily walks.   On the farm we visited the sheep while they were being sheared, fed the new piglets our leftovers and are eagerly awaiting the birth of the first spring lambs.  In preparation for May Morning we have been practicing our Maypole dances, have made violet jelly and are working on a banner.  We are once again painting outside.  It really doesn't get any better than this!!
Sweet Pea Preschool ~ The Sweet Peas are making their May Crowns, learning May Day songs, and getting excited about dancing around the May Pole. We have reopened the water table outside and the children are enjoying playing in the water and making mud pies. This week Mr. Stephen rescued a snake and a toad from the window-well in our play-yard and brought them up for the children to see! He is quite the hero in the preschool!
Rose Blossom K ~ The Rose Blossom children are working on their boats. They have been so happy to have help from Oscar, an older brother, and 8th grader and two fathers! The children can't wait to sail them at Eden Park.
We could not sail our boats without the help of Jeffrey Hildebrand, who has helped us for many years! Thank you Jeffrey!
Oak Tree K ~ The Oak Tree Children are busy making their puppets and practicing dancing around the May Pole.
Grade One ~  The first grade has been writing some of our verses into the last pages of our Language Arts book, and making May crowns, and celebrating all the Spring birthdays.  We are knitting up our flute cases and finishing up the last letters of the alphabet in beeswax.
Grade Two ~ We are hard at work on our play, "Jumping Mouse Meets New Friends". After our performances May 4th and 5th, we will review math skills, plant our garden, continue reading groups, and write in our journals.
Grade Three ~ Grade three is still very busy in the garden and will be through the end of the year and into the summer! We are planting seeds and seedlings and keeping the rabbits at bay! We have several farm visits planned and we cannot wait to see how others manage gardens, fields, and animals
Grade Four ~ The fourth grade is going to finish off the school year by studying Ohio geography and history.  We will draw maps, hear tall tales, study biographies of famous people and visit Fort Ancient.
Grade Five ~ 5th grade is finishing the year with our study of Egypt and Greece.
Grade Six ~  Roman History continues then Geometry and review.
Grade Seven ~ The seventh grade is studying African and Asian geography. We'll travel to the Spring Garden Waldorf School for the Renaissance Faire!
Grade Eight ~ Grade Eight heads into their final block of the year with Mr. Fred Annexstein for Computer Math. We have been fortunate to have Fred's expertise in this area for quite a few years now, and it is often a favorite block among students. Along with preparing for our Grade eight project presentations (6/2 8:45 and 6:00), and Graduation (6/4 1:00pm), we are welcoming a visiting student from Prague, Jan Kratochvil. If you see him, you can say "Dobry den" ('good day' in Czech!)

A Message from Kroka

In light of the recent earthquake in Ecuador, we have an important message to share with you from our sister school, Nahual Expediciones:

First of all, we want to thank you for all the support and concern you have shown in the past 24 hours. We want you to know that, thank goodness here in Palugo, and in our sister communities where we work, we are far away from the affected earthquake zone. The 7.8 earthquake directly hit the Ecuadorean coast.

There are thousands of people in a state of terrible devastation. We are creating a plan with other groups of people here in Ecuador to help these villages on the coast. Our plan consists of  two parts, the first part is an immediate action rescue, where a group will leave for the coast within the next 24hrs. The second is a group of people who will leave in about two weeks and work for an extended period of time to assist people in the construction of shelters.

If you are interested in helping in anyway, we have created a Go Fund Me account together with a friend who spent the past year working in Nepal in post earthquake support. All the information will be on the following site- Hombro a Hombro con Pedernales, or "shoulder to shoulder with Pedernales" fund. We will use this fund to buy the materials we need for the construction and the basic daily supplies that are desperately needed.

Thank you in advance,
The Families of Nahual

WECAN Video Series
It is with great excitement and joy that we announce our new video series - six videos filmed at Waldorf schools around the US illustrating the six key elements of a Waldorf early childhood education.

The subject for each video is taken from our Waldorf Early Childhood Education brochure, which is available through our online store here

Please take a moment to view the videos.  We hope that you will find them useful, beautiful, and inspiring. Click here to go to our YouTube channel.

Okeefe Music Foundation
Do you have a talented musician between the ages of 5-18 that has always dreamed of being in a music video?  Now maybe they can be!  Fill out the application to join former and current CWS students at the Okeefe Music Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Cincinnati that creates professional quality music videos.  We are actively searching for singers, violinists and cellists but children with any musical talent are encouraged to apply.  Visit www.okmusicfoundation.org for more information.

Chance to Host
There is an orphan choir from Peru visiting Cincinnati during the 1st week of May Festival. They will be singing in the area, attending our rehearsal on Saturday 5/21 and possibly the concert on Friday 5/20 as well. Their housing arrangements have fallen through and they are looking for families to volunteer to host 2-4 children and 1 adult chaperone for 2-3 nights. The families would be responsible for providing a place to sleep (you do not need to have a bed for each person you host. The children will share beds or sleep on air mattresses, couches or even blankets on the floor.) Providing dinner at night, breakfast in the morning and a sack lunch during the day. There would also be a central location to bring the children and chaperones to each morning and pick them up again in the evening.

If you or someone you know might be able/willing to help out, please contact me directly. Thanks!
