New Driver Medical Forms Effective April 20

Wood named 2016 NEDA Professional of the Year

Patty Wood was named the 2016 Nebraska Economic Developers Association Professional of the Year. The award was presented by NEDA, the largest association of economic development professionals in Nebraska at its Annual Conference in South Sioux City, NE, April 13. She was recognized for her accomplishments and years of dedicated service to economic growth to Nebraska.  Wood began her economic development career at the Nebraska Department of Economic Development in 1995, working there until 2013. During that time, she was a mentor and strategic partner to many Nebraska communities and businesses.  In 2014, Wood joined the Nebraska Trucking Association and has worked to expand the importance and understanding of the transportation and logistics industry across the state and partnering with communities and businesses to be successful. Larry Johnson, President/CEO of the Nebraska Trucking Association said, 'Patty continues to serve in a leadership position. She is an industry advisor and has developed a presentation on 'women in trucking,' which encourages females to investigate working in a transportation field. Wood sets a great example of what they can accomplish. She truly leads by example.' Congratulations Patty!

Driver turnover rates show potential for continued Wage Growth

The turnover rate at large truckload fleets continued to rise in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to quarterly data released April 25 by the American Trucking Associations, who pegged the annualized turnover rate for large truckload fleets at 102 percent in the quarter.  2015's fourth quarter was the second straight in which turnover at large fleets was at 100-plus, the first time since 2012. Turnover rate at small truckload carriers also rose, climbing 21 points from the third quarter to 89 percent. ATA sets the cutoff for small and large carriers at $30 million in annual revenue.

Fatal truck crashes dropped 5% in 2014

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released its annual report tracking large truck and bus crash data this week and determined that the overall involvement of trucks in crashes declined by 5% between 2013 and 2014, which incudes a steep 33% drop in fatal crashes. Some major findings from FMCSA's Large Truck and Crash Facts 2014 report include: Decreases occurred despite an increase in vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by large trucks of 1.5%. The number of large trucks involved in injury crashes increased by 21% between 2013 and 2014, from 73,000 to 88,000, and large truck involvement rate in injury crashes also increased by 21% during that one-year span. Pat Thomas, chairman of the American Trucking Associations (ATA)  trade group and senior VP of state government affairs at UPS said, 'It shows the continuation of the positive long-term trend, a trend made possible, in part, by our industry's continued investment in safety tools and technologies. The number of crashes involving large trucks had fallen 39% since 2004 and, while there is much more to do, that is a figure our professional drivers, our safety directors, our technicians and our safety partners in federal and state law enforcement can be proud of.'

Traffic congestion cost trucking industry $49.6 billion in 2014

Traffic congestion cost the trucking industry an extra $49.6 billion in operating costs in 2014, according to data released this week by the American Transportation Research Institute, (ATRI.) The analysis of data by ATRI revealed congestion cost an average of $26,625 per truck per 150,000 miles. Congestion caused delays totaling more than 738 million hours of lost productivity which equates to 264,500 truck drivers sitting idle for an entire working year. Additionally, the research revealed that urban areas accounted for most of the delays as 88 percent of the congestion costs were concentrated on only 18 percent of the network mileage, and 95 percent of the total congestion cost occurred in metropolitan areas.
