FDIO Newsletter
May 2016

FDIO IN MAY!

Greetings from the FDIO Executive Officer, Tahnee Davies

A big welcome to our valued long-term and growing number of new members.

In this month's Transparent newsletter, we have details of what's coming up in the governance space for our members in WA, including the next FDIO Seminar on Succession Planning for Aboriginal Organisations to be held on Wednesday, 25 May. The next day, the Governance Institute of Australia is holding its Corporate Governance Forum. Regional members take note - these two events provide an opportunity to come to Perth and dive into governance discussions with a huge number of organisations dealing with the same governance issues as you! And in early June, AIATSIS is holding its annual National Native Title Conference in Darwin, entitled "
'strong culture, strong country, strong future'. A bumper month of activities...

FDIO is introducing a new pre-qualification secretariat service and we have provided some details in this newsletter - please contact me if you would like to know more.  We received some fantastic feedback from our Seminar in Karratha last month.  Once we reach our 2016 Sponsorship Target, we will be expanding the seminar program to other regional areas on a regular basis. We've also profiled one of our member organisations, Indigenous Community Volunteers, which is engaging with many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people around Australia to develop community development activities with long-term social and economic impacts.

Sit back and enjoy the read!

EVENTS - WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING

FDIO Karratha Seminar - Related Party Benefits

Held on Thursday 28 April 2016
20 members from several Pilbara based Aboriginal Corporations and Perth professional firms attended our seminar in Karratha last week on Related Party Benefits to learn more about the CATSI Act rules and how to comply with them.

It was a wide-ranging and robust discussion covering standing approvals, community communication, managing conflicts of interest and cultural and legal obligations.

The feedback from the participants was fantastic, with comments including:
"Discussion and presentation very down to earth, and I was surprised that we were not blinded with legal conundrums."
"(I most enjoyed) the inclusion of many Aboriginal Corporation Board members. Cross dialogue between Directors. Access to broad and professional information base. Clarity of information provided. Respectful narrative towards Aboriginal directors."
"Very relevant to our organisation's current issues."

The presenters had a great time, too!  We hope this will be the first of many FDIO seminars delivered in regional and remote parts of WA.

Thank you to Patrick Churnside for his moving Welcome to Country and to  Danielle Lee and Luke Paterson of Jackson McDonald for their excellent presentation and discussion.

TOP TIPS and a summary of the Discussion can be found here.

Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV) is a non-profit community development organisation working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people nationally on 100% community-driven projects.

Community invitation and participation are core to the ICV business model. Communities invite ICV to partner with them on wide-ranging development initiatives they identify and drive. ICV then works with communities to map their assets and strengths. This participation empowers people to achieve local goals and sustainable change.

ICV connects communities with its national network of skilled volunteers from backgrounds as diverse as child care, IT, manufacturing, law and medicine. ICV volunteers work in partnership with communities to strengthen their efforts.

Because of ICV, thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people benefited last year from employment, training, education and health programs that generated real jobs and supported young people at school.

ICV engaged with over 200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities nationally in 2014-15, placing 438 volunteers to help develop community development activities with long-term social and economic impacts.

ICV success is celebrated in the current #ICVworks social media campaign through a video by campaign champion Ernie Dingo produced by BushTV.

Last year an independent review of the  ICV model by KPMG showed that how ICV works leads to long-term economic and social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by:

  • empowering local people
  • working at the invitation of community, and
  • building long-term partnerships.

By invitation only      100% Community driven     Hands on Help

This is good news for ICV community, corporate and government partners serious about closing the gap on Indigenous disadvantage.

You can support ICV by liking and sharing ICV success stories showing the ICV model of community-driven development clearly works to close the gap - #ICVworks, #ctg10.

For more information about ICV or to make a tax-deductible donation please visit their website or contact Louis Warren (FDIO member and ICV General Manager Community Development) on lwarren@icv.com.au or 0427 644 009.
