The National Native Title Conference 2016 'strong culture, strong country, strong future' will be co-convened by AIATSIS and the Northern Land Council (NLC), hosted by the Larrakia people, in Darwin, NT from Wednesday 1 – Friday 3 June 2016.

The conference seeks to highlight the challenges and opportunities of native title in the broader context of Indigenous people’s aspirations for their lands, waters and their communities. The conference aims to promote public debate, build networks, foster knowledge sharing between native title holders and other parties.

20 members from several Pilbara based Aboriginal Corporations and Perth professional firms attended our seminar in Karratha last week on Related Party Benefits to learn more about the CATSI Act rules and how to comply with them.

It was a wide-ranging and robust discussion covering standing approvals, community communication, managing conflicts of interest and cultural and legal obligations.  

The feedback from the participants was fantastic, with comments including:
"Discussion and presentation very down to earth, and I was surprised that we were not blinded with legal conundrums."
"(I most enjoyed) the inclusion of many Aboriginal Corporation Board members. Cross dialogue between Directors. Access to broad and professional information base. Clarity of information provided. Respectful narrative towards Aboriginal directors."

The presenters had a great time, too!  We hope this will be the first of many FDIO seminars delivered in regional and remote parts of WA.

Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV) is a non-profit community development organisation working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people nationally on 100% community-driven projects.

Community invitation and participation are core to the ICV business model. Communities invite ICV to partner with them on wide-ranging development initiatives they identify and drive. ICV then works with communities to map their assets and strengths. This participation empowers people to achieve local goals and sustainable change.

ICV connects communities with its national network of skilled volunteers from backgrounds as diverse as child care, IT, manufacturing, law and medicine. ICV volunteers work in partnership with communities to strengthen their efforts.

Because of ICV, thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people benefited last year from employment, training, education and health programs that generated real jobs and supported young people at school.

ICV engaged with over 200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities nationally in 2014-15, placing 438 volunteers to help develop community development activities with long-term social and economic impacts.

ICV success is celebrated in the current #ICVworks social media campaign through a video by campaign champion Ernie Dingo produced by BushTV. 

Last year an independent review of the  ICV model by KPMG showed that how ICV works leads to long-term economic and social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by:

• empowering local people
• working at the invitation of community, and
• building long-term partnerships.
