Our Spring Fayre

Its that time of the year again! Our Spring Fayre is next weekend -  the 7th and 8th May from 10am to 5pm.  We really hope that you can come over and join us at this annual event, now in its 6th year.  Lots of stalls, demonstrations of bronze casting and green woodworking, pony rides through the woods  and of course our Café will be open, serving up wonderful baguettes and toasted cheese sandwiches, tea and coffee and as always lashings of Pimms!

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who may wish to come to our Fayre.
If you are interested in taking a stall – we still have a few spaces. Please CONTACT US for more information and to reserve your place.

Forest Garden

With the advent of spring – comes the massive clear up of the Forest Garden. We are delighted that the last of the carpet mulch has finally been removed (6 x truck loads to the tip!). So now many more Forest Garden plants will shortly be planted as we slowly work our way down the seven canopy layers. We are so grateful to our wonderful Spanish Wwoofer Gabriel that the Forest Garden looks better than ever.

Bespoke Courses

We have created a new set of bespoke mini-courses which can be found on our website.  These range from mosaic making to crochet making, and from foraging to spatula making. The courses run for 3-4 hours and some of our glamping guests have already enjoyed these courses.  Most courses are for a minimum of 4 people.  Please have a look at our WEBSITE to see the range and CONTACT US to discuss your specific requirements.

We ran a bespoke chair making course on march for Mark Francis, who set out to make his chair for his bride for their wedding.  Mark made a superb chair and we are looking forward to seeing some pictures of his chair from the happy occasion.

Yurts and Idaho Cabin

We have taken an amazing amount of bookings so far this year.  Many weekends through to August are already booked!  Our new Idaho cabin is proving very popular and guests who have already stayed in the cabin have really enjoyed their stay.  If you are interested in making a booking, please visit our WEBSITE where you can very simply book on line.

We recently ran a Facebook campaign offering a free midweek 2 night stay in the Cabin.  The lucky winner was Lorraine O’Keefe and we look forward to seeing her here in the summer when she will also receive a complimentary bottle of bubbly and a delicious home cooked breakfast. Keep an eye out and 'Like' our FACEBOOK page for more upcoming competitions!

Glampers Video

We had a lovely surprise when one of our happy glampers, Marla White sent through a short clip of their stay in Savannah Yurt and enrolled the children on a short spatula making course. Just Click the image to watch the clip. Thanks a million Marla! x

Idaho Cabin makes the Guardian top 50!

Our Idaho Cabin was recently featured in the Guardian top 50 UK holiday cottages for 2016. This is a major coup for us considering Idaho has only been officially open for 2 months!

Recipe of the Month – Broccoli Salad

With the emergence of the young tips of purple sprouting broccoli I found this wonderful recipe which is very simple to do and delicious to taste

Ingredients
350g purple sprouting broccoli
salt

For the Dressing
1 level teaspoon sesame seeds
1 desert spoon of sesame oil
1 dessert spoon of lime juice
1 teaspoon Thai fish sauce
1 dessert spoon Japanese soy sauce
1 small red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

First prepare the broccoli cutting it into even-sized pieces – stalks and all. Then steam the broccoli in about an inch of boiling water and sprinkle with salt. Put a lid on and time it for about 4 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the dressing firstly by toasting the sesame seeds in a small frying pan over a medium heat without oil. Move them around so that they don’t burn.  As soon as they begin to splutter, they're ready.  Remove them to a serving bowl and simply stir in all the rest of the ingredients.  Place the steamed broccoli onto a serving dish and drizzle it with the dressing.  Toss and serve straight away.

Turmeric tips

It is very easy to grow your own turmeric.  Since it is grown from rhizomes-root cuttings, take one large rhizome and break it into small rhizome piece with 2-3 buds. Fill the pots with rich fertility soil, which should be lightly moist but well drained. Put the rhizomes 2 inches below the surface of the soil- with the buds facing up and then water the container. Add good fertilizer or compost tea.

This root requires to be constantly moist, so if you live in a place with hot climate, water it once every two days, or spray it with a spray bottle. If you live in cooler climates, you should water it less and make sure that the soil doesn’t get too wet and soft.

Turmeric root is harvested when it is mature enough and generally it takes 8-10 months. When the rhizomes are big enough, dig them up all at once, but save few pieces to plant for the next season.

And finally

Nature is a wonderful thing but sometimes there is a cruel side.  Our beautiful doves have been picked off one by one by a Sparrow Hawk.  We are so sad to have lost our lovely birds – now down to just 3 from 12.  We have to accept these forces of nature and hope that with a nesting dove that we may be able to re-build our population this summer.
We very much hope to see you at our Spring Fayre next w/e - 7th & 8th May!

Charles, Lisa, Madge, Bosun and the team!
....and yes I smell as bad as I look! Mx
