Week 8 - Don't forget your cloth bags and empty jars!
week 8 CSA  • farm & ptc market • tuesday-saturday

Welcome to Week 8 of the 2016 CSA Program. It's the last week for Session I!

Well, we've finally arrived at the halfway point for the CSA Program this year. This week marks the end of Session I, but Session II is just around the corner! We will take these next 7 weeks and work hard to get you fabulous produce and items for Session II, get the 20th annual Inman Farm Heritage Days organized and ready to go (September 16-18 - free admission), and some of us will take a couple of little vacations as well. We hope everyone's first days of school have and will be fun - the tears are already threatening my eyes when I try to get Abigail pumped up about school beginning...

This Thursday, I'll be attending Georgia Farm Bureau's Fruit Commodity Committee meeting in Tifton, GA. If you need anything special for Thursday, please let me know

This week, we'll have an adjusted share week again. One of your items this week will be a jar of pickles. The full shares will receive a pint jar ($6.50 value) and the half shares will receive a half-pint jar ($3.50 value). We'll adjust accordingly as needed.

As I said before, this is the last week for Session I. Session II will begin the week of September 27th and go through the week of November 19th. Our online Store is LIVE and we have Session II payments, September, October and November payments also available! Please let me know whether or not you'll be participating in Session II. I have several customers interested in coming into the program!

With our Meat CSA, I learned a valuable lesson... it's difficult to get pounds/dollars to match up in a share. So what I'd like to do in the future for those interested is do an order with no minimum. You tell me what you'd like to see and I'll put together a custom order for you. If you want a surprise, we can work that out as well!

One of the biggest issues we've found in the past is how to store and freeze the produce you receive in your share. I will have a few documents printed for you at the pick-up location. They will be regarding freezing vegetables, freezing fruits, and storing produce. Ask me for one if you would like a hard copy.

DON'T FORGET YOUR BAGS - we will be refilling your cloth bags with your food items. Also, bring back your empty jars and the rings - we can sterilize them and reuse!

This week's bounty:

FRUITS & VEGETABLES:

This week, you'll receive a combination of the following:

- Zucchini
- Tomatoes
- Peppers/Eggplant
- Okra
- Figs
- Pink-Eyed Peas - UNSHELLED
- Zesty Bread and Butter Pickles (full share - pints; half share - half-pints)

MEAT:

If you're interested in meat for any of the weeks between now and Session II, please let me know your order. I'll have items available from Happy Hogs LLC and Rocking Chair Ranch (beef) and chicken (whole, half birds, leg/thigh quarters, breasts (2 per pack), and wings). Please let me know the Monday before you'd like to pick up so I can get the order to the vendors in time. Some items may be a special cut, so keep this in mind!

RECIPES:

Pink-Eyed Peas - from the Garden & Guns publication

Sweet Corn & Zucchini Pie - I have been dying to try this Pinterest find...

Roasted Okra - if you don't want your okra fried or boiled, try this!

Pickled Okra - this would be an interesting addition to a delicious Bloody Mary

Fig-Honey Jam- small batch recipe and you can use some honey from Week 6 (if there's any left!)

The (F)Unemployment Special - Fig Preserves, rosemary butter and brie cheese... It's a grown-up grilled cheese!

Please email me any recipes you love that involve items from the weekly shares. I'll post them on our Recipes page on our website.

See you this week!
