Book Discussions
Brookfield Reads!  Fiction and the Occasional Nonfiction Read
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
Tuesday, August 16, 1:00 p.m.

A modern masterpiece from one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila, which begins in the 1950s in a poor neighborhood in Naples, Italy. Ferrante’s inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. This is the first book in a four-book series.

Nonfiction Book Group: These discussions are held upstairs in the library.
Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens by Steve Olson
Tuesday, August 2, at 6:30 p.m.

Survival narrative meets scientific, natural, and social history in the story of a volcanic disaster.  For months in early 1980, scientists, journalists, sightseers, and nearby residents listened anxiously to rumblings in Mount St. Helens, part of the chain of western volcanoes fueled by the 700-mile-long Cascadia fault. Still, no one was prepared when an immense eruption took the top off the mountain and laid waste to hundreds of square miles of verdant forests in southwestern Washington State. The eruption was one of the largest in human history, deposited ash in eleven U.S. states and five Canadian provinces, and caused more than one billion dollars in damage. It killed fifty-seven people, some as far as thirteen miles away from the volcano’s summit.

Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution by Nathaniel Philbrick
Tuesday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Boston in 1775 is an island city occupied by British troops after a series of incendiary incidents by patriots, who range from sober citizens to thuggish vigilantes. After the Boston Tea Party, British and American soldiers and Massachusetts residents have warily maneuvered around each other until April 19, when violence finally erupts at Lexington and Concord.  In June, with the city cut off from supplies by a British blockade and Patriot militia poised in siege, skirmishes give way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It would be the bloodiest battle of the Revolution to come, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.
