Seafood Spotlight: Red Snapper
Red Snapper
Based on average landings of red snapper from 2012-2014 and using 2016 Seafood Watch ratings, the sustainability breakdown of red snapper is as follows:
  • Landings split between the U.S. and Mexico is approximately 40%/60% respectively
  • ~85% of U.S. landings and ~35% of U.S. & Mexico combined landings are "Good Alternative (yellow)"
  •  ~2-3% of U.S. landings and 1% of U.S. & Mexico combined landings are "Avoid (red)"
  • ~13% of U.S. landings and 65% of U.S. & Mexico combined landings are unrated
Within the landings for the U.S. that meet  a "Good Alternative" recommendation, the breakdown by states are: Texas* ~35-40%, Florida and Louisiana ~30% each, and Alabama and Mississippi ~1-3% each. The majority of unrated U.S. red snapper comes out of Florida.
*Information on Texas was inconclusive, so all landings from Texas were assigned a "Good Alternative" recommendation.
