2016-2017 Partnership Pledge and Religious School Registration Forms Now Due

Partnership Pledge forms were mailed last month to all current CBH partners and were due on July 1. To keep your relationship with CBH active and to ensure timely arrival of High Holy Days tickets, please return your completed form as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. If you need new pledge or credit card authorization forms, please click here. Other questions should be directed to MK Menard, executive director, by clicking her name, or phoning 530-758-0842.

In addition, Religious School registration materials were emailed several weeks ago to the families of all continuing students. These forms are due TOMORROW, FRIDAY, July 29; after that date, a $25 per child late fee will apply. CBH History Fact of the Month
Rabbi Greg Wolfe, Bet Haverim's Longest-Serving Clergy

By the time of Rabbi Greg Wolfe's installation at Congregation Bet Haverim in 1995, the community had employed a full-time rabbi - several of them - for approximately a dozen years. However, none had stayed in Davis more than a few years. Thirty-four years after its founding, the congregation had the stability of owning its own building (CBH's first permanent home at 1821 Oak Avenue) and a

n affiliation with the Union for Reform Judaism (then known as the Union of American Hebrew Congregations), but lacked the inspiration and vision of a spiritual leader who could or would help the partnership to realize its full potential.

But, CBH's future took a dramatic turn when the dynamic, young Rabbi Greg came to town with his wife, cellist Julie Hochman, and their two small children, 2-1/2 year-old Ariella and newborn Noah. Within a few short years, the membership was burgeoning, and the programming was bursting almost literally out the doors of the one-room synagogue. At the end of Rabbi Greg's seventh year at CBH, he stepped into a pivotal role, alongside lay leadership, in engaging the congregation to dream of a future in a site big enough to hold all their aspirations for Jewish life in Yolo County. As a result, in 2004, he became the first and only rabbi thus far permanently to lead Bet Haverim at 1715 Anderson Road, our current home, six-times the size of the previous location. Yet again, 12 years later, CBH many times has more ideas for programs than there is capacity to organize them, because Rabbi Greg never stops daring our partners to dream and do what is important to them in exploring and leading Jewish lives.

Twenty-one years after Rabbi Greg's arrival at CBH, we welcome him enthusiastically again this weekend, reJEWvenated after a six-month sabbatical! How will he inspire and challenge us yet again in the months and years to come?

Israel Peace Alternatives, TICVA and the Israel Committee of Congregation B'nai Israrel present: "Asylum Seekers, Migration and Social Action in Israel,"
Featuring UC Davis Alumna Maayan Ravid

Maayan Ravid is an Israeli-American who has spent the last decade working on social justice issues in Israel, particularly focused on migration and minority rights. She will discuss issues surrounding African asylum seekers in Israel, including their legal status, rights in the state and social action.

Maayan has presented her work at the University of Oxford, at conferences at Columbia University and the Rochester Institute of Technology and in many community gatherings in Israel and abroad. She recently completed a Master's degree, which examined conceptions of African asylum seekers in Israel. Maayan has also been involved with grassroots organizing in Israel of migrant communities from Ethiopia, Sudan and Eritrea.

During the 2004-2005 academic year, Maayan attended UC Davis and worked at Hillel at Davis and Sacramento with then-director Rabbi Mona Alfi. During this time, Maayan helped to organize a fundraising concert for Darfur relief efforts.

Augment August With Sacramento Jewish Federation Programming

In a effort to serve and connect the more than 25,000 Jews of the eight-county Sacramento region, the Federation offers CBH partners an array of monthly programs for young families, senior citizens and the disabled, in particular. To view a full schedule of activities, please click here.

The following Davis-based program may be of particular interest:

Caregivers' Support Group at CBH: spouses, family members and friends who are acting as caregivers for a loved one are invited to participate. The group provides a warm environment offering support and strategies to address the unique needs and stresses of caregiving. Facilitated by CBH Partner Jane Zeiger, LCSW. A new morning session begins Wednesday, August 17, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., and continues August 31, September 7, October 5, October 19 and November 2. An evening session may begin again this Fall. $60 for the series; drop-ins are welcome at $10 per session with advance notice. All submissions must include contact information, and may be edited for length, clarity, readability and compliance with CBH editorial style. The placement and frequency of submissions within the e-tone will be at the discretion of the Communications Specialist and/or the Executive Director. No item will be included more than four weeks prior to an event/meeting date, although exceptions may be made for CBH fundraisers.
