Why I vote -- I vote because three of my grandparents traveled to America in steerage, fleeing persecution, and I want their descendants to live in the free country that they were hoping for. And found. They paid mightily to vote and were very proud to do so, and I cannot ignore what they bought with their courage. Ann B'Rells, Vice Chair, Hendersonville 1 Precinct, HCDP

Please tell us why you vote. Reply to this message. Please attach your picture. We'll publish one entry occasionally through the November general election.

On the Campaign Trail with Norm Bossert
Candidate for NC Senate District 48

Chatting with Roy Cooper

"We must recognize the full human equality of all of our people before God, before the law, and in the councils of government. We must do this, not because it is economically advantageous, although it is; not because the laws of God demand it, although they do; not because people in other lands wish it so. We must do it for the single and fundamental reason that it is the right thing to do."
Robert F. Kennedy

On Racism

Years ago I wrote an article for the Religion page in the Transylvania Times on the subject of racism.  Today I saw a posting that featured the writings of Klan members leaving anti-African-American messages around.  I also saw that the infamous David Duke has decided to make a run for United States Senate.  Yes, that would be the same David Duke of Ku Klux Klan fame, who happened to endorse Donald Trump’s efforts to become President.

In the article I wrote that the greatest danger to our country was not forces from the outside, but rather the scourge of racism from the inside.  Nobody ever thought that the Civil Rights Act would do away with racism.  One hoped that if we legally secured the rights of all of our citizens that hearts and minds would follow.  In many ways they have.

However, there is a resurgence of anger/racism (or other ism’s) directed at people of color here in our country.  There is ample documentation which shows us that African Americans are more likely to be ‘pulled over’ by police.  I have heard, ad infinitum, that African American parents must teach their children how to handle an encounter with law enforcement.

I must tell you that the police I know are kind and dedicated public servants.  But as is true in my profession (education) there are some apples that don’t really belong in the basket!

It is time to focus on justice for one and all and that blindfolded lady holding the scales of justice must truly become blind.  The hate speech that characterized so much of the Republican Convention came to ahead with Donald Trump’s angry words.

His words serve to incite those who need little encouragement to add to the din of hate speech.  We must do better.  Doing so must start in our own hearts and our own actions.  Prayer is good, for those who pray, but action is better.  We must reach out to one another and lock arms in a hopeful march for a better tomorrow.  We must all work for justice in all of activities.  What does that look like?
  • A living wage
  • The best public schools
  • Medicare Expansion
  • Fair tax policies that favor no one and ask for a fair share from all
  • RESPECT for one and all and a willingness to listen to all sides of an argument … respectfully
  • The protection of our beautiful resources.
I know you readers understand that this message requires action on your part.  Work hard to get people elected to office who believe that only with justice can the scourge of racism be qwelled!

I need your help to win this election.  Yes, I am asking for financial support.  However, also please consider contacting my campaign by writing me at elect.norm.bossert@gmail.com, calling me at 828-577-9545, or visiting my website to offer your help with phone banking, mailing, and sponsoring Meet and Greets in your homes with your neighbors.

To those of you who have been so generous already, my sincere thanks.  I am way behind in my Thank you letters … but don’t give up on me.

Norm Bossert

Maureen Copelof
Candidate for NC House District 113

I have some good news and some bad news. Let me start with the good news: our opposition's financial disclosures posted this morning, and we have outraised him 3 to 1. You can read the details of his report here, and you can read the details of my report here. I can't begin to tell you how important this is for our campaign, and how thankful I am to you for getting us this far.

You have shown that our campaign is made up of people, not private interests. Our opposition received 43 individual contributions this quarter. We received 325.The rest of the opposition's money came from PACS and other political committees. In fact, half of all of the opposition's funding has come from one person so far: Speaker of the House Tim Moore. You may know him as one of the sponsors and vocal supporters of HB2. Rep. Moore gave our opposition $5,100 this quarter. What these disclosure statements have shown is that, while our opposition is perfectly fine being owned by a few powerful people, I am running to represent the people of District 113.

But here's the bad news: this is only going to make them fight harder to beat us. They cannot afford to underestimate us anymore. Tim and the PACS supporting our opposition are going to do everything they can to make sure that the candidate that they already have bought and paid for doesn't lose. You can bet that after reading our disclosures this quarter, they are going to open the floodgates.

That means we can't slow down. Over the coming weeks we are going to need canvassers, phone bankers, writers, leaders, and of course, donors to make sure we don't lose after coming so far. It is going to take every one of us fighting with all we've got to win this thing. But when we win, and we will, we can begin the fight to save North Carolina.

Thank you again for helping us make history. We have broken the record for the total number of individual contributions. We have outraised our opposition by 3 to 1. And in November, I will be the first Democrat to represent this district in 30 years. All of this is thanks to you, and I would be remiss if I didn't let you know how grateful I am. Thank you for getting us this far. Thank you for believing in us when most thought we didn't have a chance. And thank you for trusting me to represent you in Raleigh.

As always, if you haven't already, follow me on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram. Consider making a donationvolunteering, or learning about my background on my website as well. We need your friends, family, and neighbors to check us out and follow us on our social media pages!

And, of course, THANK YOU!
Together, #LetsSaveNC!
