 President's Report. August 2016
Greetings everyone.
This season is a great time to spend some of it indoors, working our images at the computer and filing those completed photographs away. Especially this year, as we seem to be having a real winter for a change. When spring finally arrives, no doubt many of us will have plans to get out and visit some wonderful locations for photography, as individuals and maybe with planned outings with other members of our club.
Make it a goal to visit Tesselaar’s Tulip Festival in September or October and enter the wonderful competition they are running. I encourage as many clubs as possible to make it an outing in their club’s calendar of events for this year. The club I belong to, which is Southern Suburbs, has made it just that and our Newsletter to all members has an invite and date set. The advertisement for the Tulip competition will run for another two issues in Newsbrief with the coupon enclosed. Please take advantage of this offer.
Plans are well underway for the VAPS convention in 2017 and we should be able to announce a date and place very soon. The Warrnambool Camera Club have now officially accepted the task of running the convention in 2018. That will be something special to look forward to as well.
You will notice some information in this issue about the Australian Judging Association and the seminars they are running over the next couple of months. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to provide an association of which we can be proud.
If you have not enrolled in one of the training programs as yet, we ask you to give it some serious thought. Judges are always needed and, as the photographic movement grows in size, we will need even more. The Judges Association is offering, next month for the first time, the level two training program and it should prove to be a most interesting and rewarding day for those attending.

Cheers to you all in the middle of winter. I love winter. I love the winter skies with their stunning cold clouds. I love the beach in winter. To stand on a southern beach in winter and gasp in a lung full of Antartic air is a joy. It's even better if you have a camera at hand. I think I like winter because I grew up on the far west coast of Victoria near one of Victoria's most stunning bays - Discovery Bay. Too wild in winter to swim. Too wild in winter to surf, but great to explore.
Ballarat Camera Club. You will see a notice about the Ballarat Camera Club's 47th National Photographic Exhibition. Support it if you can. There are links to details and the entry-form later in the Newsbrief.
Last year I visited the MPAVILION installation in Queen Victoria Gardens (Melbourne) several times. It provided some really interesting photograph opportunities with its interesting roof, poles, shapes and textures. Well, it's on again for 2016. You can see more details at MPAVILION. I will definitely be visiting when it is complete. It looks as if it would make a great outing for club members when it is finished.
The Victorian 3D Society is a member of VAPS. I feel a little disappointed with myself in that I had never, until now, been aware of such an organisation. It looks very interesting. They are up to their 50th Convention. Wow! See details in Newsbrief.

Field of Light. 01 April 2016-31 March 2017. Bruce Munro's monumental art installation, Field of Light, is a global phenomenon. The British artist conceived the idea at Uluru in 1992 after eight years in Australia. Field of Light debuted in England in 2004 before dazzling visitors at sites across the UK, US and Mexico.
Yulara Resort will host the largest Field of Light installation to date at the place that inspired it - Uluru. Munro and his team will install more than 50,000 stems crowned with frosted-glass spheres that will bloom as darkness falls over Australia's spiritual heartland. The solar-powered installation opens April 1, 2016, closing March 31, 2017. (from Westprint Friday Fives)"

2016 Tesselaar Tulip Festival Photographic Competition

Attention All Camera Clubs
TULIPS DOWN UNDER COMPETITION - INSTRUCTIONS
VAPS has partnered with Tesselaar Tulip Farm to bring
you an exciting digital competition, see the flyer in this Newsbrief for the details.
This will be a Club entry, not individual members. Members will need to lodge their best digital images taken at the Tulip Festival during 8th September and 4th October with their clubs, and clubs will need to select the top 10 entries.
Clubs will then need to load their digital entries up to the VAPS Competition website, vapscomp.org.au, just as you did for the Interclub.
If your Competition Steward has lost the current club login to the VAPS system or you need a new one please request a new password or use the Contacts tab to contact us.
Digital images for the competition must have been taken between 8th September and 4th October and be uploaded to the system by the 14th October.
When entering your digital images please put the category name followed by a hyphen and then the title;
Beauty-Title
People-Title
Culture-Title
There is no restriction on the number of images per member or category, however, the total maximum per club is 10.
Where the image title is not preceded by the category the adjudicators will place that image into the appropriate category.
The Tulip Competition will only accept Digital Images, please follow the normal login process and ignore any reference to Prints.

The event will be back in 2017, redesigned and invigorated.

Judges and Presenters at your Club
|
|
|
Every year when we put our syllabus together we turn to the VAPS “Judges List” to engage judges and presenters for our monthly meetings.
These people are members of the photographic community that volunteer their time to come along to our meetings. In the past, there has been very little training for potential judges and no continuing training at all for existing judges. A group has been formed to try and rectify this.
The APJA (Judges Association) has put together a series of 1-day seminars to help current judges and potential judges become better trained and be of greater help to clubs.
As current judges retire, one thing is for certain, if we don’t train up new judges, it will be increasingly difficult to engage judges and speakers. Also, there will be little or no improvement in judging standards if there is no ongoing training.
Please support this initiative. If you would like to attend the next round of Level 1 training the details are below. There is no compulsion to become a judge. It is an excellent opportunity to increase your “Image Evaluation” skills.

Camera Club Speaker - Photographer
|
|
|
Peter Dunphy is a classically trained, AIPP Accredited commercial landscape photographer. He studied at RMIT in illustrative photography for three years during the heyday of that advertising based course, and also assisted some of Melbourne’s best food, still life and car photographers of that time. Peter had a small clientele established by the end of the third year and moved straight into shooting advertising photography in 1980, based in Brian Brandt’s studio.
After a number of years shooting major technical still life and product work, much of it on large format cameras, Peter started his own studio in South Melbourne where he worked on a large amount of product, and then retail fashion and people work for over a decade. During this time, Peter began to tire of large volume studio work and made an effort to push into the Landscape/People shooting arena. Success came with a major project for Tourism Victoria for The Great Ocean Road, which saw Peter shooting for four months on the project. This began a long-term period of shooting major landscape and people assignments which are still continuing today.
Over 30 years of shooting some of the best commercial landscape work in both Australia and Internationally, Peter has produced outstanding work for clients as varied as Tourism Australia, Tourism Victoria, Tourism New South Wales, Britz Campervans, Placer Dome, Philippine Airlines and many more. All the time shooting his own personal work in some of the most interesting locations worldwide.
Peter has also received multiple national and international awards and commendations for his photography over the past three decades, including….
International Advertising Festivals of New York, Best Photography, Best Poster.
International Photography awards (Photo Award New York). Best Interior Architecture Photography.
Hasselblad Masters Award.
The Australasian Writers and art director Awards (multiple times).
Melbourne Art Directors Club Awards. (multiple times).
Ever restless, Peter moved to Beechworth Vic. about five years ago, and is now changing direction again by giving a series of photographic workshops in the South Island of New Zealand, and now in Australia. Peter is also speaking at camera clubs on “Landscape Photography, a Professional Approach”. With a wealth of experience, Peter is passing on the value of his classical photographic training and varied career to keen photographers both amateur and semi- professional who would love a fascinating and informative photographic adventure.

The Victorian 3D Society and the Sydney Stereo Camera Club alternately host the biennial Australian National Stereo Photography Convention. The first Convention was held in Canberra in 1967 and Canberra has been selected by the Sydney host club for our 50th Anniversary Convention from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th April 2017. So put these dates in your diaries now.
Initial activity planning includes a full day coach tour with plenty of photo opportunities, 3D projection, technical sessions, a visit to the H A Tregellas 3D Collection at the National Library of Australia and a Convention Dinner.
The Convention venue will be easy to find as it is at Canberra’s iconic Telstra Tower.
Additional details will be provided as planning progresses.

National art competition and exhibition – Life in Death
The online art competition, themed Life in Death, will run through the website www.dyingtotalk.org.au. Entries are open until 14 August 2016. Entrants from all over Australia are invited to create an artwork (painting, drawing, photography or object) reflecting on the theme Life in Death, and submit a photo of their artwork for judging.
There is $2,000 in prize money up for grabs – $1,000 for the overall winner as chosen by a panel of judges and $1,000 for people’s choice as voted by the Australian public.
Shortlisted competition entries will also be offered the opportunity to exhibit at the inaugural art exhibition to be held at M16 Artspace in Canberra from 29 September – 9 October 2016.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
