Dear Colleague

Intuitively, managers recognise that it is good to have a variety of personality types in any team. Life would be too boring if we were all the same. But in the real world, we usually have to take who we are given, sometimes leading to serious imbalances affecting team performance.

Even if there is a severe imbalance, it may not be possible for many reasons to select different people for your team.

In situations like this, a workshop to sensitise everybody to the actual personality types in the team can at least help awareness, so reducing the risk of personality clashes.

One of the better known tools is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) which takes four pairs of "dichotomies" or personality tendencies, resulting in 16 combinations (2 x 2 x 2 x2).  Using this (or other similar) instruments as a basis for team discovery can help identify the risks in the team, if for example, too many members have one tendency or too few have another.
