August 2016 Newsletter

From Pastoral Intern Claire

Dear PVUM Church Family,

I hope that everyone’s summer is wrapping up well. As I close out my time with you here, I cannot help but feel grateful for the love that everyone at Pine Valley has shown me this summer. When I applied for this internship, I had no idea that I would be gaining a whole new church family!

My summer was packed with staff meetings, Annual Conference, pastoral visits, Vacation Bible School, the Traveler’s group, Camp Singletary, Sunday school, and even preaching, just to name a few things. At Annual Conference, I learned that even though there are usually six or seven degrees of separation between people, there are only one or two degrees of separation in the United Methodist Church…everyone knows everyone. I believe that these strong connections speak volumes to the deep love and commitment to Christ in the United Methodist Church, as displayed at Pine Valley UMC. Through all of this, I have gotten to know and connect with many members of the Pine Valley UMC family and am thankful for the relationships that were built.

I learned a lot this summer, but what has stuck out to me the most is that there is no one definition for ministry. Ministry is the way we live our lives as Christ calls us to, and we all live into this calling in beautiful and different ways. This summer has pointed me to not only my calling, but the calling of us all – to be ministers of the Gospel. I was reflecting on this summer with a friend and I mentioned that God was calling me into ministry, when he replied, “Of course He is, Claire, God calls us ALL into ministry, as ministers of the gospel.” May we all remember our callings as ministers of the gospel in our daily lives. I pray that we see where the Lord is equipping us with what we need in order to be ministers of the gospel. Hebrews 13:20-21 says:
Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever…” (NRSV)

I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me in to the Pine Valley family as if I have always been a member. I hope to visit when I can and stay in contact with everyone. Until then, I will be praying for the PVUMC family, that you will continue to be filled with the spirit of Christ!

Best,
Claire N. Holland

Book Review: Ann Joyner’s NOT WORTH SAVING: How a Severely Handicapped Boy Transformed Lives is in the UMW Category for Nurturing for Community.
Doctors told a young mother that her unborn child’s life was not worth saving. With the determination that mother found through faith, Matthew not only lived, he thrived! He spoke without talking; he loved, laughed, and made friends - all without ever saying a single word. Matthew was a light and a joy to those who encountered him. In “Not Worth Saving” Ann Joyner shares the story of her son Matthew’s twenty-one miraculous and grace filled years - and unwittingly, reveals so much about the number of lives and hearts Matthew changed simply by being alive. Ann is a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend who inspires people to live lives that hold joy and meaning.
I hope many more will find inspiration in this story as I did! ~Nancy Lee Page

Scouting Ministry

First of all, Troop 224 wants to give a big congratulations to their newest Eagle Scout, Dylan Worrell!!

Secondly, Troop 224 took a break from meetings during the summer but not from their camping activities!

Troop 224 attended Camp Bowers Summer Camp in White Oak, NC June 19th-24th.  There were 29 scouts…our largest group ever! Camp Bowers offered a variety of programs for Scouts to participate in, including the Canoe Outpost, Pathfinder Program, Project C.O.P.E. and many more. They also have a waterfront for canoeing & kayaking, high ropes & low ropes courses, and competitive shooting spots are just a few of the activities available.
Scouts Camp Champ
Scouts by Bus
We also had a second group of scouts, 6 total, go to Goshen Scout Reservation in Virginia from June 26th-July 2nd. Goshen Scout Reservation is a Boy Scout reservation designated to camping, swimming, hiking and other various activities. Goshen is home to six Boy Scouts of America resident summer camps located near Goshen, Virginia, and is owned and operated by the National Capital Area Council. The camps are all built around Lake Merriweather.

Troop 224 also spent July 21-24th camping, hiking and backpacking at Linville and Grandfather Mountain. Three crews went for the four days…one group camped at base camp, the second group stayed at base camp but also went on a day hike and the third crew backpacked Grandfather Mountain the entire four days. The backpacking crew were prepping for their trip to Philmont in June 2017 by hiking in a higher altitude and camping on the trail.

Troop 224 is back in session as of August 8th and will meet in the Gym weekly on Monday nights 7:00pm. Any boys ages 11-18 that wish to join the Troop are encouraged to visit during one of its meetings - no previous experience is required!

For further information about the Troop or Pack, you may contact the Scout Master, Jerry Jones at 794-9238 or the Committee Chair, Keith Ward at 791-6079.

Stephen Ministry

You have probably heard the buzz about Stephen Ministry recently, and what you heard is all good.  This ministry is reaching out to those in need and now more of you have the opportunity to equip yourselves to become a part of this vital ministry.  The first requirements are  to have the heart to assist, listen,  be an open vessel  to someone in need and exude a Christ – like spirit.  On September 13 classes will begin for trainees at the First Baptist Activity Center on Independence Blvd.  PVUMC has six potential trainees and we invite others to join this group.  The class is a 50-hour requirement, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 9:00.  Learning to be an active listener, and treating confidentiality with utmost seriousness are  major aspects of the training.  God’s presence is always acknowledged, using the treasures of both secular and spiritual resources when caring for others.  Deadline for class registration is August 10.  Please call Pastor Barry at 791-0353 to register.  Already trained and regular Stephen Ministers will not meet in August.  Our next regular meeting will be September 8.  Have a safe summer, continue to pray for our ministry, and thank you PVUMC for your loyal support.
