North and South Florida vie to be most polluted region
by Robert L. Knight

South Florida’s coastal waters are finally receiving the press they deserve, given the environmental disaster that continues to engulf the estuaries and beaches on both sides of the state. Guacamole-thick algae and rafts of dead fish continue to slime the waters and beaches, thanks to ongoing releases of nutrient-laden water from Lake Okeechobee.

Decades of complaints by those whose economies and livelihoods were sorely impacted resulted in passage of the Lake Okeechobee Protection Act in 2000. Continuing pollution subsequently led to the Northern Everglades and Estuaries Protection Program in 2007. Registration Now Open for the 2016 Florida Springs Restoration Summit

As a member organization of the Florida Springs Council, FSI has participated in the planning process for the 2016 Florida Springs Restoration Summit, which will be held at the College of Central Florida in Ocala from September 30-October 2.

The Summit will bring together scientists, policy makers, academics, and citizens to develop a statewide roadmap for springs restoration and protection.

The desired outcome for the 2016 summit is a highly-informed audience of decision makers, scientists, advocates, and laypersons who can work together to recognize the threats to Florida’s springs and follow through on implementing meaningful springs restoration and protection actions.

For more information about the Summit and how you can register to attend, visit www.SpringsRestorationSummit.org
