Swift & Martin Night Out(s)
Ever wonder what 1,000 Chimney Swifts look like?  What about 3,000 Purple Martins? Then you're in luck: some of our most popular Fall migration events are fast approaching.

For the past several years, Central Kentucky Audubon has participated in A Swift Night Out, a continent-wide effort to raise awareness about and encourage interest in Swifts. Our counts--especially the one in September--have topped 1,000 Chimney Swifts. Recent sightings of large numbers of Chimney Swifts dropping into the downtown Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government building smokestack (approximately 9:00 pm if you want to check it out on your own) have raised our hopes that this year's August count will be impressive as well. We'll be holding this year's counts on August 14th and September 9th (details in Events list below).

We also plan to try something different this year: a Purple Martin watch. This won't be a "count," per se; instead, it will be more like a walk, a chance for us to get together and witness the flock of thousands of martins descending into their nightly tree roosts. For the past few years, we have had a small handful of CKAS members gather to see the Purple Martin migration flocks and everyone who has seen the flocking agrees we should make a regular event of it. With luck, we'll be able to locate the roost and go see it on August 16th, the centennial anniversary of the signing of the International Migratory Bird Treaty Act. We can't think of a better migration to help celebrate this historic event. If you'd like to know where we'll be meeting, sign up for e-mail updates. [NOTE: There's risk here... Like the Chimney Swifts, the Martins tend to move their communal roost every year. We may need your help locating them. If you know where the "local roost" is for central Kentucky (look for roughly 3,000 birds flocking around power lines and trees at dusk), please let us know.]

Then check the bottom of your next Kroger receiptt: it should say "At your request we are donating to Central Kentucky Audubon Society."

Birds, Words, & Wine Took Flight, The Birds Cancelled
The inaugural Birds, Words & Wine reading group met on July 16th for a great discussion of Daphne du Maurier's short story "The Birds" upon which the Hitchcock movie is based. But CKAS's descent upon The Kentucky Theater to see the film was thwarted by a power outage caused when  workers accidentally cut power to the building. (Rumor has it they were dodging bird attacks!)  We're hoping the movie will be rescheduled for later this year.

Did You Know?
Originally called the "American Swallow" by Catesby and the "Chimney Swallow" by Audubon, this small sooty gray aerial acrobat was known as a swallow until 1825 when ornithologists reassigned it to the genus Chaetura. Swifts have adapted well to life with humans, moving into man-made structures like chimneys as substitutes for hard-to-find hollow trees. Swifts cannot perch upright, instead either clinging to surfaces or living on the wing. They eat mostly insects, mate for life, and raise 4-5 young each year. Chimney Swifts has a concern score of 12 in the State of the Birds report, the edge of the Watch List. They have lost habitat as people cap chimneys or build houses without fireplaces.

State of the Birds 2016

The State of North America's Birds 2016 report looked at the conservation status of 1,154 native bird species that breed in the continental U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Every bird species was assessed throughout its range and annual cycle. The assessment employs biological criteria to evaluate distinct components of vulnerability, including population size, distri- bution, threats and population trend. The end result is a thorough report which can help guide conservation initiatives in the years to come. Of the 1,154 species considered, 432 hit the Watch List, meaning they had concern scores of 14 or higher qualified or had a score of 13 coupled with a sharply declining population. CKAS is  dissecting this list to determine which species our efforts can best help, right here in Kentucky.
