Cheylesmore Library - Volunteers Required
Another resident has contacted us, which means that 3 residents have expressed an interest in volunteering at Cheylesmore Library, to help keep it open.
Under draft proposals, Cheylesmore Library can now only stay open if run by volunteers from May 2017.
If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please contact the Community Centre or email cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.

Anti-Social Behaviour on Whitley Common
Last week a resident sent us this:
Councillor Bailey,
I am amazed that you have not had any contact regarding the anti social acts on Whitley common
We have three young lads on motor bikes going at great speed across a busy park with many children about. The bikes are also being used to get away from the common through footpaths and the writer saw a near miss with an elderly lady who was nearly hit by one of these idiots.
In addition the bikes are being used late at night on normal roads, no lights, helmets and I feel safe to assume, no insurance!
Finally the riders have smashed down a fence on the Whitley side of the common so that the old road can be accessed and to provide an additional escape route. This fence needs urgent replacement
We have had this problem before but not on this scale and it is only a matter of time before a bad accident occurs

Roger contacted the relevant department & is awaiting their response.

Low Carbon Technology Centre Planning Meeting

In our 3rd July update we reported that Coventry University had submitted plans to construct a Low Carbon Technology Centre on the remaining plot of land on the corner of Quarryfield Lane directly opposite the Cemetery.
The planning meeting to discuss this application will take place on 4th August at 2pm in Diamond Rooms 1 and 2 - Council House. The meeting will be open to the public, should you wish to attend as an observer.
The agenda and related documents can be found here

Parking on Dropped Kerbs – more information
Further to the information that we’ve included in our last 2 updates of what can be done about cars parking on dropped kerbs, a resident sent us this about his experience
Dear Councillor Bailey,
We had occasion to call out the enforcement officers when a person visiting a school blocked our vehicle from getting out.

Although they admitted it was an obstruction, it was not 60% over the entrance which meant that they could not issue a PCN (Penalty Charge Notice).

Also a PCN can only be issued if the parked car is preventing you from exiting.

In the case of what can be done, the best success in to call the non-emergency police number, who then phone the owner and they tend to move it fairly quickly.

In the next few weeks the editor will:
  • compile all that we believe to be true about parking on dropped kerbs
  • have it verified by the council
  • insert the information in a future update
so that we all know where we stand on this matter.

War Memorial Park Set to Get a New Outdoor Fitness Trail
Funding has been approved for the city’s War Memorial Park to install a new outdoor fitness trail.
Adult visitors to the park will be able to use the new sporting and exercise facility from September thanks to a £16,756 grant from not-for-profit funding body WREN. Nine exercise stations will be installed between the Park & Ride and the Visitor Centre.

The funding was awarded thanks to an application to WREN by the Friends of the War Memorial Park and Coventry City Council. The Friends consulted with residents and visitors across the City to gauge local opinions and formulate plans.

Joe Newby, WREN’s grant manager for Coventry, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the War Memorial Park Outdoor Fitness Trail project and pleased our funding will help enhance the Park for visitors. We hope it attracts people from across the City. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”

Sky Ride Coventry
On Sunday 7 August you will again be able to cycle on traffic-free streets as the only Sky Ride in the West Midlands comes to town.
The FREE family event will give people the chance to ride part of the ring road but this year the route will be extended to go through Fargo Village.
There will be lots of entertainment along the route including the Extreme Mountain Bike Show, British Cycling’s Go Ride children’s obstacle course, quiz show games and face painting.

The ride can be joined at many points along the route, including Fargo Village, and a variety of different bikes can be hired on the day if you bring valid ID.  If you pre-register, you can collect your free reflective bib on the day, as well as take advantage of a free bike safety check by Halfords.

Coventry and Warwickshire Employer Skills Survey 2015
Overview
  • C&W has higher levels of vacancies than both the West Midlands and England. It has seen greater growth in vacancies since the 2013 survey, reflecting higher growth in the demand for labour.
  • C&W has higher levels of hard to fill vacancies and skills-shortage vacancies than WM and England. In addition, C&W has a higher proportion of establishments reporting staff who are not fully proficient and jobs which are difficult to retain staff.
  • Although C&W businesses report higher levels of challenges, they report greater numbers of training days per employee to tackle these.

NHS Tax Reclaim
NHS workers and former NHS workers are trying to reclaim income tax and National Insurance they paid while training at some point since 1999.

MoneySavingExpert.com has investigated the issue and believes possibly 10,000s of NHS staff may have overpaid tax or NI while taking part in the 'Widening Access Training' scheme. Some may be owed up to £1,000s - the biggest success we've heard of is almost £6,000

Stay safe playing Pokémon Go – Message from West Midlands Fire Service
We’re asking Pokémon Go players to take extra care as they’re out and about in the West Midlands.
It’s so our firefighters don’t end up being called out to rescue them.
In the few days since the game was launched, two men have fallen down a cliff playing the game in the US.
Closer to home students have been robbed of their phones, while our colleagues in Wiltshire had to rescue a group of friends from a network of underground caves in which they were lost.
The mobile phone version of the popular Nintendo game uses geo-location tracking to work out where the user is, then shows them how close they are to virtual Pokémon on a map.
Players then walk or ride towards the nearest character to ‘catch’ them by using the phone’s screen to throw a Pokéball at the target.

The game’s augmented reality is great fun, but always keep a close eye on your actual reality and surroundings:
  • avoid chasing Pokémon in the road and keep away from railway lines
  • don’t trespass
  • never play games if you’re driving
  • take extra care around water
  • ideally, try to play the game with friends and avoid areas or situations which could be unsafe
