Pink Dog Creative Monthly Artist Exhibition
Pink Dog Creative
Pink Dog Creative is happy to announce the following news and events:

Pink Dog Creative welcomes Sunnyside Trading Company, our newest tenant at 346 Depot St.

Sunnyside Trading Company is the newest addition to Pink Dog Creative. Offering one of a kind home furnishings and textiles, this small family business has been inspired by its worldwide travel to experience different cultures. Siblings Will and Charlotte Hough have curated their collections into a new kind of lifestyle and aspire to share their Travel Home Philosophy with the locals and visitors of Asheville.

Traveling around the world is amazing, but being in the comfort of your home can be even better. Each item that they offer is one of a kind and tells a story from foreign lands. You can experience colors and textures from abroad in your living room.

Will and Charlotte work with their father Stuart, who began an antique business in Colorado in 1978. He specialized in European decorative arts, especially the rustic antique furniture from the countrysides of Europe, and moved his family to Paris in 1995. After ten years abroad, the family moved back to Colorado and a few years later Stuart shifted his interest away from European style to focus on tribal arts.

With Stuart’s knowledge and influence, and Charlotte and Will’s mission to connect people, places, and stories, Sunnyside Trading Company is unlike any furnishings store you have ever seen. There are mid-century modern style chairs upholstered in vibrant vintage textiles from India; intriguing  "free edge" organic objects from Thailand; a large selection of pillows and floor cushions made from vintage fabrics sourced in North Africa, India, China, and Vietnam; vintage and over dye rugs from Turkey and Morocco; and rustic/industrial/reclaimed antiques from all over the world.

You can check out their new store at 346 Depot St. They will be open Monday - Saturday from 11am to 7pm, and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. Sunnyside Trading also operates a large trade warehouse that may be visited by appointment.

They look forward to you visiting them soon!

Pink Dog Creative congratulates co-founder, Randy Shull on his residency in Prague

Pink Dog Creative congratulates co-founder Randy Shull on his upcoming international artist residency in Prague, Czech Republic. Sponsored by The US Embassy in Prague and the Czech Ministry of Culture, Randy has been awarded a one-month residency at Bubec, a 100,000 square foot  artist-run initiative that is both work space and exhibition space. Bubec Studio was founded in 2000 by Čestmír Suška, a sculptor. On the outskirts of Prague, Bubec is a former brick factory located in Řeporyje a 12th century village and historical township which combines ancient and contemporary architecture.

Shull submitted a body of work that investigates the notion of change and identity. This residency will provide an opportunity to explore the boundaries that continue to perpetuate stereotypes and divisions and consider ways in which to bridge the gaps that keep us all in separate categories. The possibilities of working in Prague, long shuttered and now open, offer additional inspiration and considerations.

Shull’s studio work has been the subject of several solo museum exhibitions. His most recent, Wide Open at Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center, opened July 1, 2016 and runs through Sept. 3, 2016. Accompanied by a publication, the exhibition explores the relationship of Shull’s design for the museum and his influences. Out of Line, a solo exhibition in 2014, was presented at the Spartanburg Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC. Channeling the USA, curated by Janet Koplos, debuted at the McColl Center in Charlotte, NC and traveled to Virginia Wesleyan University in 2012 and was accompanied by a catalog. Crossing Boundaries, a mid-career survey exhibition, traveled from 2010 to 2011 to The Gregg Museum, Raleigh, NC, the Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco, CA, the Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue, WA and to the Ogden Museum, New Orleans, LA. A full color catalog was produced.

His work is in the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Museum; The High Museum, Atlanta, GA; The Renwick Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft & Design, Charlotte, NC; Racine Museum of Art, Racine, WI; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Raleigh, NC, The Asheville Art Museum, Asheville, NC; The Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, AL; and Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

And his continuing exhibition at the Black Mountain College Museum, 69 Broadway, Asheville, NC.

Joseph Pearson and Jessie L. Whitehead, Ph.D.
Perceptions: The Black Male; Images of Dignity

at Pink Dog Creative, 348 Depot St. Asheville, NC 28801
Through August 7

"I am human, and nothing of that which is human is alien to me." — Terence

There is a seemingly continuous collective negative perception of black males in the United States. In light of some most recent events, we believe that now is an important and opportune time to address the various perceptions of black males in our society. This body of work portrays different perceptions of black males in the United States, with an emphasis on positive representations. We believe in the power of art to provoke and/or expand society’s re-imagination, effectively contributing to social transformation.

“The latest art exhibit at the Pink Dog Creative in the River Arts District seems, in part, a response to all this talking at, rather than conversing with, or, better yet, thinking through. Perceptions: The Black Male, Images of Dignity is a showing of artists Joseph A. Pearson’s and Jessie Whitehead’s individual works. The exhibition — a combination of print and oil — is both visually stimulating and thought provoking.”

Stephen St. Claire
at Pink Dog Creative

A few days ago, I ordered a 6' x 8' panel for a new project I want to undertake. I knew it would be big. Then today it was delivered. This thing is truly huge.  At 6' x 8', this monster will be the largest painting I've ever done. Most paintings take between 3-4 weeks. This one will take six months. I wanted something larger, more intricate and more challenging than anything I've ever done before.

This is not a commission. It will hang in my studio until someone adopts it.

Why do this? Well, you know how some people get into running and they end up running a marathon? If you ask them why they would do that, many of them will simply answer "to see if I could do it."

So that's my answer. I want to see if I can do it.

You're welcome to visit the studio regularly and check the progress!

Grace Carol Bomer will be moving into the Warehouse Studios, Studio #6 on the 2nd floor, just over the tracks. David Holt is being inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in October, so has been very busy with little time to paint. Catch him for a live performance or watch him on The State of Music on PBS.

Pink Dog wishes them both continued success.
