CNSC Consultations / Deadlines Related to Nuclear Waste 

The current count is over twenty open "invitations" to comment on nuclear waste and /or nuclear reactor related files at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, including comments on regulatory documents, discussion papers and licenses renewals. Please visit the CNSC web site or contact Northwatch for the full list; this notice highlights only the key items related to nuclear waste. 
Radioactive Waste and Decommmissioning Discussion Paper - CNSC 2016

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) released discussion paper DIS-16-03, Radioactive Waste Management and Decommissioning in May 2013. According to the CNSC notice, "this discussion paper seeks stakeholder feedback on proposals to update and clarify the CNSC’s waste regulatory framework. Comments are being sought on opportunities to incorporate Canadian and international best practices and to update CNSC documents with more modern terminology.

Comments are due September 12th, and can be sent by email to cnsc.consultation.ccsn@canada.ca. Northwatch will convene a conference call in late August to share comments - please email Northwatch by August 12th if you would like to participate. 

Regulatory Oversight Report for Waste Management, Storage and Processing Facilities in Canada: 2015. 

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a public meeting on December 14 or 15, 2016 in Ottawa, ON, during which CNSC staff will present the Regulatory Oversight Report for Waste Management, Storage and Processing Facilities in Canada: 2015.

This report provides CNSC staff’s assessment of the safety performance of radioactive waste management, storage and processing facilities, sites and initiatives in Canada during the 2015 calendar year. The report will be available after October 14, 2016 by request. The deadline for submitting a  participant funding application  to the CNSC is August 26, 2016.

Licence Renewal for OPG's  Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) 
OPG has applied for a ten year extension to their operating license for the Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF). The WWMF is located at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station in Kincardine, and receives the low and intermediate level operating and refurbishment wastes from Pickering, Darlington and Bruce nuclear stations. The 2017 application an expansion of the current site and construction of additional storage structures.
Applications for participant funding must be submitted by October 30th. 
OPG’s submission and CNSC staff’s recommendations to be considered at the hearing will be available after February 10, 2017, and requests to intervene - including written submissions - must be submitted by March 13, 2017. The CNSC will hold a public hearing in April 2017 

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Environmental Assessment Underway for Decommissioning and Waste Projects at Chalk River, Rolphton and Whiteshell
The Canadian Nuclear Laboratories - operated by a consortium of nuclear service and engineering companies and contracted by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to operate AECL properties - has launched environmental assessments for the decommissioning of reactors at Whiteshell, Manitoba and Rolphton on the upper Ottawa River in Ontario, and the construction of a million cubic metre radioactive waste "disposal" facility at Chalk River. Participant funding is available through the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's participant funding program, with deadlines in September. Organizations interested in collaborating with other groups are encouraged to contact Nuclear Waste Watch.
Know Nuclear Waste is a Northwatch project, delivered in collaboration with concerned residents in communities being studied as possible burial sites for high level nuclear waste and other public and expert organizations
