Sitka Farmers Market continue this summer

It's that time of year again, which means we're hosting seven Sitka Farmers Market s throughout the 2016 summer. We've already hosted three markets — on July 2, July 16, and July 30 (links include slideshows from the markets) — and we have four more on the schedule.

Our remaining markets this summer will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 13, 20, Sept. 3, and Sept. 10, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall (235 Katlian Street). Matthew Jackson is serving as our Sitka Farmers Market manager this year. National Farmers Market Week is Aug. 7-13 this year, so swing on by the Sitka Farmers Market on Aug. 13 to help celebrate. Also, don't forget to recommend the Sitka Farmers Market in the American Farmland Trust's eighth annual Farmers Market Celebration (we were Alaska's top market last year and want to repeat).

The markets will undergo a few changes for the 2016 market season, including a new management structure this year that is more vendor-driven. We restructured our vendor fees to put more of an emphasis on local food and produce, and now we're recruiting folks to sell their local products at the markets. Intern writes 'Building A Local Food System' series

Our Bulldog on Baranof intern this summer, Claire Chang has been busy. In addition to her duties helping lead gardener Laura Schmidt at St. Peter's Fellowship Farm and running the swag and EBT booth at the Sitka Farmers Markets, Claire also has been writing some "Building A Local Food System" articles for our website. She already has written about Keith Nyitray and his work with Finn Island Farm and the Sitka Food Co-Op, Florence Welsh and the Welsh Family Forget-Me-Not Gardens, and Dave Nuetzel and Blatchley Community Gardens. She should have another story or two before she heads back to college later in August.

Last chance to add new Pick.Click.Give. donations

If you're like most Alaska residents, you filed your 2016 Permanent Fund Dividend application before the March 31 deadline and haven't given it a second thought. But did you know you can still go into your application and make new Pick.Click.Give. donations through Aug. 31?

This is a great way to support the more than 600 Alaska nonprofits participating in Pick.Click.Give., including 24 from Sitka. By donating to the Sitka Local Foods Network, you support us in our mission to increase the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. Change comes to SLFN's board of directors

The Sitka Local Foods Network board of directors has undergone some changes in recent months, and that includes some new officers. Matthew Jackson is the new board president, with Chris Todd taking Jackson's old vice president spot. Kathy Jones remains our treasurer, and Ben Timby will be our new secretary.

We had a couple of resignations due to some unexpected life changes, which means we recently added two new board members — Ben Timby and Greta Lewanski. We still need to find one new board member to fill a vacancy that will happen in August (Brandie Cheatham is moving to Minnesota), and we also are recruiting for when three of our usual board terms end in December. That means we need to fill their spots as we continue in our mission to increase the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans.

Our board is a working board, which means each board member also sits on one or more of our committees related to the Sitka Farmers Market, St. Peter's Fellowship Farm, education, fundraising, board development, etc. Even though we work hard, we have a lot of fun as we work on improving the food security of Sitka and Southeast Alaska. Also, feel free to attend our next board meeting from 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the See House behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church. Our board meetings are always open to the public.
