Sustainability Dialog: Community Composting at Urban Farms
The Growing Club will show how waste becomes wealth with urban on-farm community composting. They have created a productive market farm that serves 25+ families using compost created on site from local waste materials, including stable bedding and food waste. The farm demonstrates the potential for utilizing local green waste to build healthy soils for ecologically integrated urban agriculture, a model for closing the loop and teaching people about ecological cycles and principles.  Free and open to all.  Cosponsored with the League of Women Voters, the Interfaith Sustainability Council, and Pomona College.

Sustainability Dialog: Claremont's Urban Forest, A Community Treasure
We have enjoyed the beauty, shade, and clean air our urban forest has provided for over 100 years.  Currently our trees are challenged by drought, new diseases, and invasive insects.  Learn how you can be a voice for the trees through Urban Forest Management Planning.  Be empowered to support our forest with proper watering and keep Claremont green!
Presented by Dave Roger, Urban Forester, Consultant with the City of Claremont
Free and open to all.  Cosponsored with the League of Women Voters, the Interfaith Sustainability Council, and Pomona College.

Garden Notes Aug 2016

The August Garden Notes are hot and cool!  They will get you clearing brush from fire zones and looking out for fire blight.  Then read how to plan and plant a plot in the shade, and perhaps redo your irrigation.   You can also find out how to pickle onions, where to take gardening classes, and more!
Read it HERE.
Just a reminder...the Garden Club does not meet in August but will return in September.

Mulch and Compost Giveaways
Chino Basin Water Conservation District wants to help you landscape.  Load your own free mulch, pitchfork and sturdy containers recommended (no plastic bags).  Mulch conserves water by reducing evaporation and building soil structure.  The mulch is a mix of local tree trimmings donated by Green Army.  Compost will also be available this month!  Groups, please contact CBWCD at 909-626-2711 to schedule a pick-up.  No commercial landscapers may participate.

Claremont City Water Restrictions Update
At the July 26 City Council meeting Claremont returned to Level 1 Water Restrictions to conserve this precious resource.  This means that residents may water 3 days a week according to their street addresses: even numbers on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday for 15 minutes per station; and odd numbers on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday for 15 minutes per station.  As always, any watering hoses used must have automatic shut-off valves, and watering of hardscape or water runoff are not allowed.
