HCA Annual Conference Review

Aloha,

This month we gathered for the HCA's Annual Conference, Trade Show and Cupping Competition: two days of workshops and events designed to promote the improvement in quality of Hawaiian coffee, consumption, marketing, and company relations.

It's our mission to provide a forum for education, communication, and pursuit of shared goals. To that end, we're adding workshops and lectures each year to help you produce better coffees, keep up with current research, and improve your marketing.

If you did attend the annual conference please fill out this survey. Remember: the only way we can improve is by receiving your feedback!

If you weren't able to make it, we hope to see you next year on Maui! You'll find links to the presentations and workshops in this newsletter and on the HCA website.

Suffice it to say, we learned a lot: from research on
breeding predators of Coffee Berry Borer at the farm, to protecting our intellectual property rights, to social media marketing, better brewing, and another excellent workshop on processing for coffee quality!

We were also reminded about the looming threat of Coffee Rust -- the most economically important coffee disease in the world -- which could dwarf the impact of C.B.B. on Hawaii's coffee crop if we're caught off-guard. Awareness, communication, and rapid response times are absolutely vital keeping this at bay. Please make sure you're aware of what it looks like ( stop reading and review these photos ). However, the good news is Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) has developed rust resistant cultivars for distribution to farmers!

A very big congratulations to the winners of the annual cupping competition this year! In the Commercial division, Aloha Hills Kona Coffee (Maragogype) & Arianna Farms (Kona Typica, Progeny 502, and Old Hawaiian) tied for first place. In the Creative Division, Greenwell Farms won first place with their Pacamara - which was also first place overall!

As always, if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, feel free to reach out via email or through the HCA's Facebook page.

Cheers and Mahalo,

Kelleigh Stewart

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

July 29, 2016

Aloha and thank you for reading the Hawaii Coffee Association newsletter!

We’re coming of yet another successful conference, our 21st, and our 8th statewide cupping competition.

Consistent with the industry-wide strategic plan, the HCA is working to implement it's recommendations by redoubling our efforts with a commitment to education focused on quality. We held two separate workshops stressing the importance of brewing and processing for quality, and both were very well attended and received.

Our annual cupping workshop was our largest yet, and approximately 10 attendees had the opportunity to experience coffee cupping for the first time. And the statewide cupping competition scores reveal constant improvement in Hawaiian coffee’s already high quality - a remarkable outcome.

There are so many selfless volunteers that helped to make this conference an overwhelming success - space limitations prevent me from listing them all here.

Speaker presentations covered a wide range of researchers and regulators from USDA, HARC, PBARC, HDOA and UH CTAHR - all shared comprehensive updates and projections for the future. Many of their presentations are available on our website at hawaiicoffeeassociation.com

Numerous vendors were on hand to showcase their goods and services. A demonstration of the latest optical sorting technology was outstanding. These new machines will have a meaningful impact on life in the coffee business in a post-CBB environment.

The members made their selections for a new Board of Directors, and priorities for the organization and industry it serves are being cemented. I hope to be announcing an expanded portfolio of member services in the coming months.

The Hawaii Coffee Association is fueled by volunteerism. I urge you get involved to help shape our industry. Any member can volunteer and serve on committees. I trust you share my hope that our collective spirit of selflessness can be leveraged to enhance education, communication and advocacy to propel the HCA, and the Hawaiian coffee industry to new heights.

Mahalo,

Chris Manfredi
President of the Hawaii Coffee Association
We're a volunteer-run organization, and we'd love your help in furthering the mission of the Hawaii Coffee Association. To participate in any committee or project, please contact the Director(s) involved with the committee(s) you're interested in.

COFFEE QUALITY WORKSHOP WITH SUNALINI MENON

On September 27, Q grader and lifetime coffee professional, Sunalini Menon, will offer a coffee quality workshop for Ka`u farmers from 9 am to 1pm. She will be visiting farms of workshop participants in the Ka`u area.

This event is free to current members of the Ka`u Coffee Growers' Cooperative or the Palehua Ohana Cooperative.

All other attendees are requested to make a $200.00 donation to support Ms. Menon's travel fees.

The workshop will entail a presentation on the interconnection between post harvest processing and quality in the cup, followed by practical exercises, which would include visual evaluation and cupping.

Ms. Menon has worked with farmers all over the world who depend on coffee for a living, including in Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and India.  Her particular joy is to make improving quality easy to understand and fun.
