Review: Specialist Course in Couple Therapy

RAV’s 2016 Specialist Course in Couple Therapy (SCCT) concluded at the end of June with the graduation of 24 students. The participants came from diverse backgrounds but shared an infectious enthusiasm for couples counselling and learning. The five-month SCCT covered a range of theories including psychodynamic, systemic and integrated behavioural, and involved discussions of how to help couples in crisis. The course also involved the practical application of theories through case discussions, live demonstrations, clinical practice workshops and experiential learning using reflective practice.

Graduate feedback

“The case discussions really helped to integrate the different learnings and demonstrate the application of the theory.”

“The clinical practice groups were a useful extension from the therapeutic self-group and provided an opportunity for therapeutic self-issues to play out during the role plays and then reflect on them.”

“The theory reading was very informative and gave me some insight into many different ways there are to conduct counselling.”

A number of the SCCT students will return to RAV in semester two to participate in our Live Consultation training, providing them with the opportunity to view counselling sessions through a one-way mirror and use reflective team work to assist the clients. Some students are also commencing their year-long clinical placement at our Kew Centre.

We wish all our graduating students success in developing their craft and establishing themselves within the couple counselling profession.

The next SCCT course will begin on Tuesday 7 February 2017 in Kew. Find out more on our website.

Spotlight on communication

We communicate with people every day - at work, at home and in the community. How we communicate with others is, therefore, very important, particularly when we want to convey a specific message or we need to work with other people to achieve a task. Do other people hear what you want to say? How do you know?

Sometimes people hear a different message to what you were intending. This may be because of the language used or your body language, or the result of the other person’s different experiences and associated different meanings. It may also be because you are thinking about something else and not really hearing what the other person is saying.

So how can we communicate clearly so that our messages are received as we want them to be heard? Using the following key communication skills will help you to communicate effectively with others.

•    Attending
•    Active listening
•    Checking your understanding/using empathy
•    Questioning
•    Summarising
•    Managing emotions

Find out more about each of these communication skills in this quick tip sheet.

It’s important to communicate effectively at home and at work as misunderstandings can lead to disagreements and strong emotions such as anger and sadness. These emotions and the accompanying behaviours can then be misinterpreted and escalate the situation and make future interactions more difficult.

For more information and training on effective communication skills and managing difficult situations at work come along on 11 August 2016 for our Managing challenging behaviours workshop. You will learn about why people exhibit challenging behaviours, strategies to manage your emotions and steps to help others work through issues they may be experiencing.

Workshop: Borderline personality disorder - at the edge

Tuesday 6 September, 6:30 - 8:30pm. Camberwell.

True to its name, borderline personality disorder (BPD) confronts therapists with ideas and situations that seem to be on the edge of what is acceptable, expectable, and even tolerable. Our practice may also then gravitate toward such an edge. A psychodynamic approach may assist in this situation. This workshop will deal with the phenomena of boundaries, self-harm, suicidality and difficult feelings in the therapist, using a variety of psychodynamic theories to illuminate case material.

Workshop: Therapeutic case management for clients who have experienced complex trauma

Thursday 20 October 2016, 10am - 4pm. Camberwell.

With all the new trauma tools on offer, it can sometimes be hard for practitioners to ensure that the personal is balanced with the political, to ensure that people’s experience of injustice and inequality gets heard, and that practice is aligned with trauma-informed principles. By examining trauma-informed practice, this workshop will provide participants with ways of balancing these principles when working with clients presenting with a complex trauma background.
