Image of the Month: 3D PC-MRI
Our August Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr Pauline Hall Barrientos, demonstrates the 3D PC-MRI technique which visualises blood flow through vessels. This animated image illustrates 3D blood through a carotid with stenosis, showing high blood flow velocities (red colour = 100 cm/s) around the region of stenosis. It is hoped that 3D PC-MRI will improve the process of diagnosing and staging cardiovascular disease.
More submissions needed! Please help us continue to publicise Scottish imaging research by e-mailing your interesting and impressive images to kristin.flegal@glasgow.ac.uk, including an image credit and short descriptive caption for each one (and optionally a link to your research webpage).

SINAPSE Member Profile: Sineth Rathnayake
At the start of this year, SINAPSE awarded funding for PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. The Member Profile section of our newsletter is currently being used to introduce the incoming students.

Sineth Rathnayake will be undertaking a PhD studentship at the University of Dundee where his project is titled 'Haemodynamics and vessel stiffness in arterial disease and endovascular treatment' with Prof Graeme Houston, funded by SINAPSE and Vascular Flow Technologies. The aim of the project is to produce a system for research use that will combine the 3 measurement methods of elastography which measures stiffness, patient specific modelling which estimates stress (force or tension) and computational fluid dynamics that assesses the relationship between blood flow, vessel stiffness and vessel wall stresses in an integrated package. Sineth completed his BEng(Hons) Mechanical Engineering in 2010 at the University of Dundee and is studying MSc in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Dundee currently. His research interests are on image based computational fluid dynamics of blood flow in arteries which he has been working on for his MSc project. Also he has Computer Aided Design experience working as a Design Engineer for a local company who manufactures ambulance tail lifts, which he believes will be very useful for his PhD project.
