Vicar Marty Celebration

This Sunday, July 31

Has it been a year already? Sunday July 31 will be the last day Marty Wagner will be our official Vicar! At 9:30 next Sunday between services, we will celebrate her ministry here at Living Springs. Refreshments will be served and we will be sharing "Marty Moments"! Bring cards and any photos you have; or share your own Marty moment! So please come and help us celebrate with Marty and her husband Ron!

Calendar Planning Meeting

This Sunday, July 31

All current committee leaders and group heads, please attend our important meeting on July 31 at 4:00.   We will place major dates on the calendar through January 2017!

Project Abraham

Friday, July 29

As part of her internship, Vicar Marty is required to create and carry out a project unique to our parish.  Vicar Marty’s project is entitled, Project Abraham, whose purpose is to familiarize us with our faith cousins, Islam and Judaism, who like Christianity, trace their faith lineage to the covenant God made with Abraham and Sarah.
An important piece of Project Abraham includes a visit to each faith’s place of worship.  While we have had an opportunity to visit a local mosque, we have not yet visited a Jewish synagogue or temple.  This Friday evening, interested persons from Living Springs will travel to Tree of Life Synagogue to view their 7:30pm Shabbat (Sabbath) service.  We will meet at Living Springs at 6:30 pm to carpool to the synagogue.  Tree of Life is located at 6719 Trenholm Rd Columbia, SC 29206 if anyone wants to drive separately and meet us at the synagogue.

Because we will be guests of the synagogue, dress for this event is conservative ( no short skirts, no shorts, slacks would be acceptable, and modest shirts or blouses ).

If anyone has questions about this visit please call Vicar Marty at (9040 625-0084.

2016-2017 Pictorial Directory

You are invited to participate in a new pictorial directory!  Living Springs is making a concerted effort to assemble a pictorial directory of our church families.  (It will also include staff and our preschool families.)
We have partnered with Lifetouch to professionally photograph families for the directory.  Each family photographed will receive a free 8X10 portrait and a directory.  Families will be able to immediately view their portraits and will have an opportunity to purchase portrait gifts.  This is an opportunity NOT a requirement.

Length of Time for Portrait Session
While Lifetouch materials reflect an hour for portrait sessions, the following is a summary of the process: Families are asked to arrive 5 minutes prior to their appointment time to complete registration (located in the LS Fellowship Hall). Two portrait sessions are scheduled each ½ hour.  Immediately following the portrait session, families will view and select their portrait for the directory and have the option to purchase additional portraits.  The amount of time it takes for the family to be photographed and to select portraits will vary by family.

A New Way to Give ….

especially great for the summer when you’re away!

No Checks, No Cash…Givelify

Living Springs has entered into a new era: the age of anytime, anywhere digital giving.  We have partnered with Givelify, the free, mobile giving app for churches. Givelify enables individuals to give digitally from anywhere, no checks or cash required; your offerings, tithes, and special gifts can be made right from the palm of your hand. There are no frustrating web forms or text-to-give codes to memorize and better yet, the app is free and totally safe and secure.

Givelify simply provides an alternative format for giving; it is not intended to replace our more traditional means for regular giving…offering envelopes, pew envelopes, or your own bank’s direct bill pay.

Summer Hymns

June 5 Through August 21!

Do you have a favorite hymn you would like us to sing during worship this summer?   We are asking individuals to share their favorite hymn with the congregation.  We ask that the hymn come from any of our current/former Lutheran music books and that you share 2-3 sentences why the hymn is important to your journey of faith.  Please use the Summer Hymn Form in the narthex, or contact the office or Jim Zieche.  Praise to the Lord in Song!

Lessons for Sunday, July 31

First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23

The teacher of wisdom who wrote Ecclesiastes sees that working for mere accumulation of wealth turns life into an empty game, a “vanity of vanities.” Nevertheless, he asserts in the next verse, it is good to find enjoyment in one’s work because such enjoyment is a gift from God.

Psalm 49:1-12

My mouth shall speak of wisdom. (Ps. 49:3)

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-11

Life in Christ includes a radical reorientation of our values. Just as the newly baptized shed their old clothes in order to put on new garments, so Christians are called to let go of greed and take hold of a life shaped by God’s love in Christ.

Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

In God’s reign, the “rich will be sent away empty.” Jesus uses a parable to warn against identifying the worth of one’s life with the value of one’s possessions rather than one’s relationship with God.

Church Humor...

A pastor's wife was preparing pancakes for her young sons.
The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their Mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, "Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait." The oldest boy turned to his younger brother and said, "You be Jesus."
Do you have some church humor you'd like to share? We would love to share it too! Send your humor to Lisa in the office.
