Brights Spots Research on Cover of Nature

In one of the largest global studies of its kind, researchers from around the world--including from COS--conducted more than 6,000 reef surveys in 46 countries across the globe and discovered 15 "bright spots" – places where, against all the odds, coral reefs are doing better than expected.

Partner Shoutout

Blue Serengeti makes a splash during Shark Week: Congratulations to Dr. Barb Block of Hopkins Marine Station, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (as well as the University of California Santa Cruz) for the wildly successful Blue Serengeti episode of Shark Week that aired July 1st on the Discovery Channel.  Millions of viewers tuned in to see Block and her team of researchers tag white sharks along the California Coast, and Dr. Jeremy Goldbogen’s team tag humpback whales and follow the underwater movements of ocean predators using highly specialized camera tags. With cutting edge technologies, incredible cinematography and just the right combination of science and entertainment, Block and the multi-institutional science teams, educated a broad audience about why these magnificent creatures visit the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary annually. “I really enjoy the challenge of providing great science and top predator stories in film," said Block. "Each time I do this, I learn more about how hard it is to communicate science effectively. Luckily large white sharks capture everyone’s attention.”
