Today's 1.Question interview guest: Blake James - Athletic Director - Miami (FL) (part 1)
The Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito now says Missouri Interim AD Baker is the leading candidate to be named new AD for the Mean Green at a Friday presser, which will take place after a Board of Trustees teleconference. (link); KOMU Sports Director Gervino added via Twitter, "Baker would be tremendous hire for North Texas, he is bright and very well-connected in college athletics circles. Baker's wife is from northern Texas, and Baker's hometown of Valliant, Oklahoma is not far from the North Texas campus" (link, link).
Reports hit the wire yesterday that Big Ten Commish Delany was set to retire...in 2020. USA Today's Auerbach sourced "a person with direct knowledge" after Delany said at Big Ten Media Days yesterday he wouldn't be around for the next TV rights negotiations in 2022. (link); Delany later sent a text to the Chicago Tribune on the topic without confirming the development, "Work still challenging and fun - lots of energy." (link); The Detroit Free Press jumped right into possible replacements at the top of the conference with Michigan State AD Hollis & Northwestern boss Phillips both noted. Hollis was asked if he would be interested, "I have unfinished business at Michigan State University and I am committed to our student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters." (link)
Big 12 download: West Virginia Prez Gee with a handful of comments, "We didn’t want to be seen as poachers of other conferences. We wanted to make sure schools would approach us so we’d have clarity on their interest...We don’t want to be part of league dismemberment, so to speak...One can make an argument that in three or four years we’re going to be moving away from the traditional kind of [conference] networks. Frankly, from my point of view — and many points of view — I think that’s where we’re heading...I think the commissioner will be doing his due diligence between now and our next scheduled meeting, which I think is in October. I suspect he’ll be prepared to discuss recommendations with us then." Also says he's not set on having to get to 12 or 14 schools, calls Houston a "fine institution" (link); December of 2014 was a long time ago & a lot has changed since, but when the subject was broached by Commish Bowlsby back then, he noted consideration of West Virginia as the lone member on the East Coast, "We have to be mindful of their situation. If we took somebody in that was on the far West Coast it would certainly do a disservice to our member in West Virginia." (link); UCF AD White says a $10M exit free from the AAC wouldn't be an issue. Also, "We’re not of the thinking that public campaigning is appropriate or respectful and appreciative of the opportunity from the members of the American Athletic Conference. So we handle all of those conversations in a more confidential type way...It doesn’t have to happen right now and it doesn’t really matter, in my opinion, what league we’re in for us to realize our long-term potential." (link); SMU announced a $150M facilities effort to include a new FB practice center, including one of the indoor variety, as well as a new Soccer stadium. AD Hart on the move's connection to Big 12 expansion, "It's not reacting to the Big 12. We've been working on this for 18 months in terms of analyzing design plans. The board has given its blessing. We had been working on the announcement for about six weeks...Whether it's the Big 12 or the American Athletic Conference, or another conference down the road, you have to invest constantly at the highest level possible. That's the path to national recognition and championships." (link, link); Cincinnati Interim Prez Davenport has been active on Twitter promoting the Bearcats as an attractive option for the Big 12 (link); The Greenville City Council is fully behind a push to get East Carolina in the league (link); Former BYU & current Virginia FB HC Mendenhall on the candidacy of the Cougars, "Man, it would be a huge mistake if anyone passed BYU over as a potential addition to their league. But I think it's also necessary for BYU to grow and expand and move forward as well." (link); Colorado State HC contracts include stipulations that raise pay marks considerably if the Rams move to a 'Power 5' league (link).
More from Big Ten Media Days in Chicago: Two notes from Commish Delany's comments yesterday, said he did not anticipate a penalty system for concussion protocol & that the league is not pursuing a transfer rule like the SEC's that limits student-athletes based on previous behavior (link, link); Penn State AD Barbour unhappy with reports that other programs are telling prospective student-athletes the Nittany Lions are facing further probation from the NCAA (link); Ohio State HC Meyer says he'll be talking to PSU HC Franklin on being mentioned as part of the group that's negatively recruiting, "That's a pretty strong allegation. We've got a great deal of respect for every school in our conference." (link); Barbour also said renovations to Beaver Stadium could decrease its overall capacity (link); Rutgers & Maryland are talking about a rivalry trophy (link); Former OSU student-athlete Pryor's five-year disassociation ban is over & Buckeyes AD Smith says he'll welcome Pryor back with open arms (link); Momentum for the Whitman-Smith pairing at Illinois continues (link); Iowa AD Barta working on another extension for HC Ferentz, wants him to retire in Iowa City. Also says plans for the $70M+ end zone renovation for Kinnick Stadium are almost complete (link, link).
Mountain West in Vegas: Commish Thompson says the Big 12 is not being aggressive in courting new members, but notes that a couple of his schools told him they're researching & pursing the option. Thompson also added a few others in the league didn't notify him, but are also going through the process. In the opposite direction, Thompson indicates "one to five" institutions has contacted his office, including Wichita State, about being in the mix should schools leave, "What's going to happen, nobody has any idea." - link (article), link (Thompson video)
Navy Senior Assoc. AD for Business Services Winbush named the new AD & VP at Shepherd (DII), his alma mater. Winbush has been a staple with the Midshipmen since 2001 & will get going in Shepherdstown, West Virginia on the 22nd of next month. "I look forward to working with our great coaches, student-athletes and community to build on the tremendous success from recent years. Our goal will be to provide our student-athletes with an outstanding experience academically, socially and athletically." - link, link
SportsBusiness Journal's Ourand has talked to some cable & satellite operators who expressed pessimism for the new ACC Network achieving seamless distribution. "ACC Network’s first test comes next summer when ESPN starts negotiating a new affiliate deal with Altice, a negotiation that promises to be a tough sell since the cable operator has systems near New York City, which is a long way from ACC member Syracuse and not really part of the conference’s footprint. One of the few cable operators that does not carry SEC Network, Altice has been public about its desire to cut costs." Ourand says ESPN will be looking for a similar carriage rate for the new ACC Network, $1.30 per subscriber per month in-market & $0.25 out-of-market, as it did for the SEC version. ESPN's affiliate deals with Comcast & Charter run until 2021, Dish Network's until 2022 (link). If you interested in building your knowledge base further on what's going on below the surface with TV, check out our latest Athletic Director U. from this past Sunday (link).
With the new Big Ten-ESPN pact on the horizon, NJ.com's Sargeant wonders if Rutgers can get a larger slice of the league TV pie sooner than expected given its ties into the biggest media market in the nation, New York City. "That's not going to happen," per one source. By 2017 full B1G members could be receiving over $50M annually in TV monies, but the Scarlet Knights could receive less than a quarter of that sum as they're not due a full share until 2021. Commish Delany pointed to pre-negotiated contracts with schools when asked yesterday. - link
Washington State AD Moos released a statement in connection to the fight over the weekend that sent several WSU students to the hospital. Pullman Police are reportedly looking into an "handful" of Cougar FB student-athletes as persons of interest. Moos: "It is our understanding there is a thorough investigation underway by local law enforcement and we will cooperate fully as we take these matters seriously. In addition, facts are being gathered within the athletic department in order to provide assistance. We have high expectations for the conduct of WSU student-athletes, and treat any alleged allegations with the utmost transparency...We will refrain from further comment until the findings of the investigation are complete." - link
Chicago State has named MBB HC Dildy as the Cougars interim AD. Dildy has been at Chicago State since 2010 and will remain in both roles until a permanent replacement is found. Dildy: "With the help of our coaching staff and administrators I look forward to taking the athletic programs to new heights. My main focus is to ensure our students excel in all areas." - link
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Apple makes more than half its revenue outside of the U.S., but demand for smart phones around the world has slowed down, yet the company still beat earnings expectations yesterday & will press on in India. Under Armour saw its 2Q results get hit by the bankruptcy of Sports Authority that led to a $23M impairment charge. But, overall sales were up 28% to $1B & UA announced a new deal with Kohl's that will see 1,100 department stores add the brand by early next year. UA will also take over 53,000 square-feet of space on Fifth Avenue in NYC to build-out a massive retail location with CEO Plank commenting, "Our goal is to open the single greatest retail store in the world." - link

Will non-compete clauses in SEC FB coaching contracts become more standardized? That's the question asked by SEC Country's Shirkey as he reviews past proceedings that kept Arkansas OC Enos from chatting with Georgia HC Smart when he arrived in Athens, but didn't stop Smart from hiring Hogs OL coach Pittman. SEC to SEC AC movement is certainly nothing new, though Razorbacks HC Bielema is one who believes it's a practice that will increase for lateral moves. Atlanta-based attorney Reale notes the benefits for schools, but also negotiations for the AC. A bit more. - link
The Undefeated explains how funding issues and Title IX compliance are the two primary reasons why minor sports like track & field, golf and tennis are being put in jeopardy or cut entirely at HBCUs. SWAC Commish Sharp: "The overarching issue is not HBCU athletic departments dropping sports. We must first acknowledge that the business model for college athletics has changed, and lower-revenue institutions — not just HBCUs — are fighting to financially withstand some of those changes. ... Three out of the five states that host our schools have faced significant budgets cuts. A lot of HBCUs simply don’t have the resources to absorb the financial cuts and losses as well as the larger schools." - link
Nevada is reporting a $135K surplus in FY16, which is the Wolf Pack’s largest in at least ten years and marks the second consecutive year the unit has reported a profit. The Wolf Pack reportedly made around $175K from its appearance in the Arizona Bowl and netted $190K in profit from the CBI. CFO Nunn: "You can never point to one thing because it’s such a patchwork quilt. It’s a combination of everything. Our donations have still been strong and ticket sales were good this year. The bowl game always helps and we managed to make some money there and CBI in basketball was helpful, too. It all adds up. You can’t put your finger on one thing, but it all contributed." Includes a number of notes on expenses, as well. - link
Ohio released its 2016 annual report, a handful of highlights: FB & MBB attendance led the MAC for the fourth consecutive season, the Bobcats also led league attendance in Baseball, Softball, Volleyball & Field Hockey, overall ticket sales revenue exceeded goal by $210K & set another all-time high, student support increased by 8% for FB & MBB, licensing sales also topped historical university & league marks, more. - link
The Tennessee compliance office with a direct approach at dealing with rule-breakers from outside the department, pointing out their missteps via Twitter. Assoc. AD for Compliance Donovan put on letterhead a formal request to cease and desist the production and sale of a t-shirt that could jeopardize the eligibility of QB Dobbs and posted the letter along with this tweet; ".@jack_bombero This is a violation of #NCAA Bylaw 12.5. Please cease and desist to protect our SAs' eligibility!"  - link
Big South FB HCs and the Commish Kallander gave their thoughts on a possible 12-game season for all FCS programs, with many of them having serious concerns related to having to schedule six non-conference games each year. Charleston Southern HC Chadwell: "I think what it might do if you go to 12 is maybe helps us get 11. Would we ever be able to fill it with 12? We’re struggling right now to fill it with 11. Maybe if they do open it up, you get more of a chance to get an 11th game if you have 12. But then you get the pressure of, 'You need a 12th game. You need a 12th game.'" Commish Kallander: "Overall right now, I worry about health and safety issues related to playing another game and trying to cram that into our schedule. I worry about the overall impact on the sport and what it will do. I’m not sure that I’m in favor of going with a 12th game at this point." - link
Technology Today presented by Paciolan, Now Spectra, Ticketing & Fan Engagement
Here's why the streaming sports initiative on Twitter is such a big deal: Yesterday the company announced Q2 revenue growth of only 19.9% compared to 60.93% this time last year & 124.12% at the same point two years ago. While those might sound good in a traditional business environment, tech start-ups like Twitter are far from "traditional." More users watching the new sports content = the potential to sell video ads for higher rates. (link); Sticking with tech notes here, Conference USA is due to announce another streaming partner or two for its games in the near future (link); NYT biz reporter Kang on another hot topic: "Verizon CEO: Yahoo brings mobile video opportunity, particularly sports. Says has talked to NBA's Silver and NFL's Goodell for partnerships" (link).

Arizona's SB Nation outlet provides reminder context on AD Byrne's compensation agreement in Tucson that's of interest if reports of his move to Florida come to fruition. "Byrne’s retention plan includes 100,000 shares (the coaches have 175,000 each) and was originally set to vest in the year 2022. However, that time frame was moved up two years to 2020. As of last September, Byrne’s stock value was worth $2.3 million. In addition to that, if he stayed until 2016, he would get another $500,000 from the university." Byrne's pay is due to increase to $750K in 2019-20 compared to outgoing Gators AD Foley's $1.23M in 2013. - link
Mississippi State freshman FB student-athlete Simmons has been found guilty of malicious mischief and pleaded no contest to a simple assault charge related to the March fight where he was caught on video striking a woman that's been widely covered and debated. The five-star prospect, who has been suspended one-game by the university for the incident, has been ordered to pay a total of $1,361 in restitution and fines. - link
It's been five years since Utah has joined Pac-12, and the Utes' budget has grown from $29.7M in the final year of the Mountain West to this year's $72.2M. Larger payout for Tier 1 television rights and Pac-12 distributions have been the major reasons for that growth, but donations have doubled ($10.8M), and revenue from FB and MBB ticket sales is up $13.1M. Rising coaching salaries and escalating debt are areas of concern for the department, but CFO Smith says the slow growth of Pac-12 Network revenue has been perhaps the biggest disappointment during the Pac-12 era. Smith: "You plan for the worst case scenario when it comes to expenses, and you hope for the best when it comes to revenue. It can be challenging, but it's still an exciting time." - link
Money: New Hampshire's Wildcat Fund generated a record $810,561 for 2015-16, which is 23.5% higher than the Fund's previous best year. (link); A 34% jump in the number of donors to 926 helped Milwaukee's Panther Fund increase overall donations by 73% to a record $1.3M for the fiscal year. The previous records were set last year when 687 donors gave the athletics fundraising arm a total of $770,675. (link); Constructions crews have begun renovations at the UL-Lafayette’s Tigue Moore Field, but officials are now saying that the project will cost $16M instead of the originally projected $10M because of an enhanced design. (link)
Around Higher Ed: The University of Louisville Board of Trustees delayed yesterday's "special session" to discuss the resignation of Prez Ramsey because of scheduling conflicts, but the meeting should be a go for this afternoon. (link); Grambling State picks attorney and former state senator Rick Gallot as the school's next president. Gallot immediately donated a $20K check and said he is in it for the long haul (link); Florida Gulf Coast will pay Witt/Kieffer $140K plus expenses for assistance on replacing retiring Prez Bradshaw. FGCU will also pay $25K to Sibson Consulting to do a pay study related to the president's position. (link)
Also noticed: Tulsa World's Haisten says Doug Gottlieb still wants to be a MBB HC one day, having just missed out on appointments at Oklahoma State and Tulane. (link); Wisconsin AD Alvarez and the Green Bay Packers are discussing the possibility of another Badgers FB game at Lambeau Field (link); The longstanding "Double-T" at the north end of Texas Tech's Jones AT&T Stadium has been removed to make room for stadium renovations. (link); Former Syracuse star and NBA player Anthony hosted a "closed social discussion" at a Boys & Girls Club in L.A. on Monday as part of an effort to bridge the racial divides between athletes, teenagers and police (link); Louisiana Tech QB Coach Rattay tweets a photo from midfield looking at a nighttime vies of the school's football facility (link); The state of Maryland and the NCAA have reached a $50K settlement with the family of Derek Sheely, the Frostburg State FB student-athlete who passed away from concussion-related injuries in 2011.(link); Major League Soccer matches on ESPN and ESPN2 are up 32% this year, with an average viewership of 312K while ESPN Deportes viewership numbers are up 44% to 46K. (link); Maybe conference folks should give these guys a call: (link); Attorney & TV executive Swift continues his look at the UCF deal by WME-IMG, "Interested to see equity structure of new UFC. Moodys reports WME gets $25M/yr management fee; faces contingent acquisition fees up to $250M. Envelope math suggests Fertittas retained 5%, Dana 2% of UFC based on Moody's report of $325M rollover equity fr mgement/existing investors." (link, link)

Another two-part 1.Q, this time with Miami (FL) AD Blake James. In this first segment, James talks about the advantages of getting an AD job from the inside, something he's done twice, back at Maine in 2003 & then most recently in 2013 with the Hurricanes. Key quote: "Anytime you're given an opportunity, I guess my approach has always been you have to take it like it's yours & go forward as though the job is yours to lose." A bit more, including success corollaries between Orono & Coral Gables. Tomorrow includes Blake's path up the college athletics ladder with notes on those who he learned from along the way, some college Baseball talk & what books he points to as most important for AD leadership.
