MHE event on Article 12 of the UN CRPD

On June 30, MHE held an event on Article 12 of the UN CRPD on legal capacity and persons with psychosocial disabilities. MHE would like to thank all participants with a particular thanks to Helga Stevens MEP who hosted the event and has shown an unwavering dedication to persons with disabilities in her work in the European Parliament and helped to shine a light on the rights of persons with pscyhosocial disabilities as part of our event.MEP Richard Howitt also took part and asked some important questions about what the EU, particularly the Commission and Parliament, can do on legal capacity.

MHE at the Disability High Level Group

MHE attended the Disability High Level Group organised by the European Commission which gathers the disability experts from all the Member States and disability organisations at European level. MHE presented the work we did last year on the UN CRPD. It was also the opportunity to hear from a number of Member States who have recently ratified the UN CRPD (Congratulations to Finland and the Netherlands!). We also received an update from Ireland who will  hopefully be the last to ratify later this year. 
News from institutions and other bodies
Resolution on mental health adopted at the 32nd Session of the Human Rights Council

Good news!  A Resolution on mental health and human rights was adopted during  the 32nd session of the Human Rights Council. MHE welcomes this Resolution which raises concerns about violations and abuses of human rights that persons with mental health problems and psychosocial disabilities may be subject to are expressed.The Resolution also calls for a report on mental health and human rights to be submitted to the 34th Human Rights Council Session. MHE will be seeking to contribute to the report which will be prepared by Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Social Platform Survey on the European Structural and Investment Funds
 
The Social Platform, which MHE is member of, is currently holding a survey on the use of the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), in particular the European Social Fund (ESF) and the European Fund for Regional Develeopment (ERDF). The survey aims at shedding light on the use of the funds, collecting best practices and bringing evidence to the European Commission about difficulties in access to ESIF for NGO. Deadline is 22nd August.

MHE publishes Dutch Presidency Scorecard

MHE recently published its scorecard on the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the European Union (January-June 2016). The scorecard analyses the performance of the Dutch Presidency commitment to and promotion of mental health. This new scorecard system will evaluate each rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union commitment to and promotion of mental health.

Save the Date! 10th October 2016 (WMHD) - MHE Event in the European Parliament

As every year, World Mental Health Day will take place on October 10th. This year MHE will organise a special event in the European Parliament entitled "World Mental Health Day: Mental health and young people in the digital age: addressing risks, seizing opportunities". Speakers will include Members of the European parliament, experts from Facebook, Google, COFACE as well as the European Commission. The event is kindly co-hosted by MEP Miriam Dalli and MEP Julie Ward (S&D). Please pencil the date in your agenda, the invitation will follow in the coming days!
European Parliament adopts the report on the implementation of the UN CRPD

On Thursday, 7 July, the European Parliament adopted the report drafted by MEP Stevens on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). The Report was adopted by a large majority of MEPs  across all political groups. MHE welcomes the report as well as the inclusive and participatory approach taken during its drafting process and appreciates the close consultation with Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) at every stages.

EU Commission to organise national consultation events on the Social Pillar
 
The EU Commission  has opened a public consultation until December 2016 on the upcoming European Pillar of Social Rights, which will represent a big chunk of MHE's policy work in the coming months. As part of this consultation process, the EU Commission is scheduling national consultations in each Member State's Permanent Representation.You can download below the calendar of the scheduled consultations for each country. Some meetings have already taken place (Romania, Bulgaria, Ireland, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, France, Belgium) but we invite  member organisations to contact directly their own Permanent Representation by clicking HERE. We greatly encourage you to participate in the events and use MHE's advocacy work (Guidance and toolkit) in this context.

Avocacy France supports the EachofUs campaign

We received a nice picture from our French member organisation Advocacy France who held their annual general assembly last month. Do not forget to visit the #Eachofus campaign website to see more pictures from our supporters.

An event on psychosis  in Lithuania

Our polish member organisation Otwerty Dialog informed us about an interesting event on the treatment of psychosis to be held in Kauna, Lithuania from August 31  to September 4.  The event is organised by the lithuanian organisation Systemic Family Psychotherapy Association and will encourage participants coming from across Europe to  to share clinical practice, philosophical, scientific and educational perspectives on psychosis.
