After we had a nice camping trip last weekend, GOPHER has taken a break from activities, but keep an eye on Facebook for some spontaneous August drinks! CALL FOR NEW GOPHER BOARD!

Gopher is looking for an enthusiastic new board! In October, the current board will resign and a new board will take over the awesome job of organizing social and educational events for the PhD community in Groningen. Are you a social, active and inventive PhD student who is not afraid to take initiative, is a teamplayer, and is willing to spend his or her free time on Gopher duties? Then apply for a position in the board via THIS FORM. The following positions are available: chair, secretary, treasurer, PR manager, head of educational events, head of social events and a website responsible. Some of these positions can be combined within one person, depending on one’s qualities and preferences. Previous experience in a board is useful, but not necessary.
If you are interested but not yet sure if being a board member is something for you, you are also welcome to apply. You can indicate in the form what kind of information you would like to receive first.
Application procedure: depending on the number of applicants we will have a first selection based on the information you will provide in the form. In September, we will have interviews with suitable candidates. Soon after that, the new board will be formed and during a transition phase of approximately one month the new board will be introduced to their duties by the current board. |

Everything we do, we do for you, which is why we really need to know what you think about our events and our organization. Therefore we ask 10-15 minutes of your precious time to fill in this questionnaire HERE. What’s in it for you? First of all, if you complete the questionnaire, you can win some special prizes! Next to that, we will of course use the results of the questionnaire to improve Gopher so we better meet your needs and likes.

08/09 Crazy 88
Crraaaaazzzzzyyyyy 88, is a game where groups of people compete by doing all kinds of funny, strange and competitive activities within a set timeframe to score the most points. This activity will be on a be there or be square basis. Simply show up at 20.30 at the Grote Markt and look for the people in the Gopher shirts, no registration / costs required. You can come with your own team or be appointed one. The winner will of course get a fabulous prize!

02/10 Falling Walls Lab
Do you have a great idea you want to share with the world’s top scientists? Falling Walls Lab is the platform you need. The Lab is an interdisciplinary forum for aspiring scientists and professionals from around the world. It is part of the annual, internationally renowned, conference for breakthroughs in science and society; the Falling Walls Conference. The Falling Walls Lab offers hundreds emerging talents, entrepreneurs and innovators a stage to pitch research project, business plan, entrepreneurial or social initiative to their peers and a distinguished jury from academia and business.
The preliminary round for the Benelux is hosted in Groningen on the 2nd of October 2016. You can sign up until the 31st of august. A prestigious jury from science and business awards the best pitch with €750 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Berlin for the final competition on the 8th and the Conference 9th November 2016 (1st place). The second and third place winners receive €350 and €150, respectively.

An enthusiastic PhD group enjoyed the outdoors at Cnossen Leekstermeer. It was a nice and sunny weekend full of fun activities: cycling, swimming, playing games, walking, water activities, campfire, chilling and relaxing. Most importantly we ate, drank, laughed and enjoyed our time with friends. It was truly an awesome weekend! You can find pictures of the trip HERE.

GOPHER is the PhD organization of the University of Groningen, providing a platform for PhD students to develop themselves, to network and to get to know fellow PhD students through educational and recreational events. Every PhD student is welcome to participate in GOPHER’s events and to suggest and organize new events.
