Jim Hay Wins Major Prize in Tokyo

On Saturday, January 24, the largest quilt festival in the world will honor NMC Alum Jim Hay with a prestigious (and top secret!) honor. Help us cheer him on long distance!

Jim's statement about the artwork, entitled Tightrope:

Gone the days of simple pleasures. Here the days of drastic measures. Tension fills our world after 9/11. Culture, politics, religion, games are all more extreme. I started Tightrope in 2001 but set it aside as too painful. Completed in 2014.

Tom Hanks Confesses, "I Owe It All to Community College."

Last week, Tom Hanks penned a love letter to his community college, Chabot College in California.

"President Obama hopes to make two years of free community college accessible for up to nine million Americans. I’m guessing the new Congress will squawk at the $60 billion price tag, but I hope the idea sticks, because more veterans, from Iraq and Afghanistan this time, as well as another generation of mothers, single parents and workers who have been out of the job market, need lower obstacles between now and the next chapter of their lives," he writes.

10 New Year's Resolutions for Your Estate

A new year is here, which has many of us making resolutions to improve our overall health. Maintaining a healthy estate plan can help ensure the well-being of your loved ones.

Consider setting these resolutions for your estate.
  • Meet with an attorney to map out a plan for your estate.
  • Create or update your last will and testament to ensure that your estate is distributed the way you want.
  • Meet with a financial advisor to determine how much to save for retirement.
  • Purchase a life insurance policy or review current policies to help ensure that there is adequate coverage for your loved ones.
  • Create or update your health care power of attorney to ensure that someone you trust makes medical decisions on your behalf if you become unable.
  • Create or update your living will to formalize your wishes regarding prolonged health care and terminal conditions.
  • Create or update your financial power of attorney to ensure that someone will handle your financial decisions if you become unable.
  • Establish guardianships for any minor children, so someone you trust will take care of them if their parent(s) pass away.
  • Encourage your adult family members to create their estate plans if they haven't already done so.
  • Decide what organizations you want to support and include them in your estate plan.
Is Northwestern Michigan College Foundation a Part of Your Estate?
