Principal's Corner...
Happy 2015! The New Year Brings Resolutions...
Many of you made New Year’s resolutions in the last few days. I would like to challenge you this year to think about adding to your resolutions by reading a quote that I have on my desk at CHMS. This is definitely one addition that you can stick with and accomplish in the coming year. “The best inheritance parents can give to their children is a few minutes of their time each day,” attributed to M. Grundler. Just a few minutes each day will make such a difference in the lives of your children and your family. Please consider this in 2015!
Geography Bee and Spelling Bee
Winter is our “season of bees” at CHMS with both the Geography Bee and the Spelling Bee. All students will participate in the Geography Bee in their Social Studies classrooms, and the finals will be held on January 9th. The CHMS Spelling Bee will also take place this winter with initial classroom “bees” happening in later January and the final round will be February 6th. February 6th will also be the students versus staff basketball game, so it’s sure to be an exciting day!
MAP Testing
We will be starting our winter MAP testing on January 12th. All students will take a reading and a math MAP test, and tests will be completed during the Language Arts block. Seventh grade students will take their tests on January 12th and 13th; eighth grade students will take their tests on January 14th and 15th; sixth grade students will take their tests on January 22nd and 23rd. If a student is absent and cannot take his/her test on the scheduled day, or if he/she is not able to finish his/her test during the allotted time period, he/she will receive a make-up notification slip from his/her advisor with the date, time, and location for his/her make-up session. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Joni Sherman at jsherman@d181.org.
Just A Heads Up...
Eagle Café Spirit Lunch Friday
Students are invited to come to school in their PJ’s this Friday, January 9th in celebration of the 2nd quarter Spirit Lunch. Those who preordered the spirit lunch will enjoy “Breakfast for Lunch” from Home Run Inn Pizza. Students can confirm their order by checking the spirit lunch list in their advisory class starting Wednesday.
Thank you Adopt a Family
Thank you for making the 4th Annual CHMS Adopt-A-Family Project a HUGE success!
CHMS partnered with HCS Family Services in their holiday giving program, “adopting” 20 families in need from the DuPage County area. Over 75% of the gift requests included coats, boots, hats & mittens. We try to make sure each child receive at least one toy gift and one clothing item. This year, approximately 180 CHMS families participated in our program, collecting close to 300 gifts and gift certificates, showing the true meaning of the Christmas Spirit. "Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone," said Charles Schulz. This sentiment is embraced and acted upon by the CHMS community. Special thanks to the Peer Leadership students for helping this year!
Manna Campaign Begins Monday
The next Manna campaign begins tomorrow, Monday, January 5th with order and payments due by Wednesday, February 18th. This will be the final campaign for the 8th grade students to accumulate vendor discounts in their CHMS Manna accounts for their Washington D.C. trip. The gift card pick up will be Thursday, February 26th from 2:30 to 3:30pm in the school lobby.
Mock Newbery Ends Soon
The Mock Newbery Reading Incentive ends on Tuesday, January 20th. For the last couple of months, students have been reading books from the Mock Newbery list and earning a raffle ticket for every book they read. (Students must read three books to be eligible for the raffle.) PTO volunteers have created some awesome raffle baskets for students to win. Make sure your student finishes their book by January 20th for a chance to win their favorite basket!
End of 2nd Quarter
Just a reminder that Friday, January 16th is the last day of the 2nd quarter at CHMS. Check out your student’s progress on Parent Portal:
