Sustainable Innovation News

Knowledge workers always have to obtain the latest novelties in their field.  There are two ways of quickly and effectively obtaining this: one is visiting conferences and the other is following courses. I've added a list of recommended symposia in the field of Chemical Engineering and Process Innovation to this newsletter, as well as new dates for some of Harmsen Consultancy's courses and excerpts from a couple of my blogs.
If you have any news you would like to share in the next newsletter, please contact met at info@harmsenconsultancy.nl .

Recommended Symposia in 2015

For the field of process technology I recommend three symposia for 2015:

ECCE10 + ECAB3 + EPIC5, Nice, France, 26 September – 1 October 2015. Chemical engineering and biochemical engineering for a new sustainable process industry in Europe.
This congress covers virtually all industrial process branches and all process technologies, including process intensification and biotechnology.

Biorefinery for Food, Fuels and Materials, 2015 symposium, 15-17 June 2015. Montpellier, France
The international Biorefinery for Food, Fuels and Materials 2015 symposium will address the question of how biorefining can be developed within a systemic framework that will best reconcile the various societal challenges of the 21st century. "

European Symposium on Chemical Reaction Engineering – ESCRE 2015, Fuerstenfeldbruck, Germany, 27-30 October 2015.
Nearly every process has a reaction section.  Latest knowledge of reaction engineering is therefore very important for process engineers.  Since 65 years ESCRE is the Symposium to go to. It covers all types of reaction engineering developments.

Biotechnology Grows Big

Georg Grossmann, VP Process Development of BASF, gave the Hoogewerff lecture at NPS14 about the challenges for developing large scale biotechnology processes. BASF has many biotechnology processes in the innovation funnel. Their biotechnology process developments include the use of bacteria, yeasts, fungi and algae. The products from these biotechnology processes are: complex molecules such as enzymes and biopolymers, natural chemicals, such as vitamins and bulk chemicals among which, succinic acid, ethylene glycol, PDO, BDO, and acrylic acid.   By 2020 they plan to have 30 billion €/y additional turnover from these novel processes.

Improving Solar Efficiency

The cost of solar cells for electricity production rapidly comes down and because of that the number of commercial large scale installations increase and because of that more companies become interested in providing components which improve the solar cell efficiency and durability. Two examples of improving solar cell efficiency were presented at the Nationaal Sustainability Congres in Den Bosch this november:
