President's Corner

Happy New Year!!

Welcome to 2015!  I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a great Christmas, New Years and Holiday Season.  I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend our December meeting.  I enjoyed Julian’s presentation on condenser water heat recovery.   I hope you were able to learn about when and why condenser heat recovery makes sense.  Remember it is only applicable to certain jobs, but where it can be used, it can lead to significant energy savings.  This month I would like to thank Patrick Castelvecchi who has served the chapter faithfully for years in chapter leadership.  This year Patrick is serving as our President-Elect.  Patrick also has helped improve our newsletter and allowed our chapter to post to social media.  Patrick is also serving as the chapter’s government grassroots committee.  I look forward to Patrick’s continued leadership as he serves as president next year.

This month we will be hosting Luis Gonzalez as he presents on clean agent fire suppression.  Clean agent describes the use of inert gas and other chemical agents to put out fires.  Come to learn about clean agent systems and how they relate to mechanical systems.

Thank you!

Wesley

This Month's Speaker...

Luis Gonzalez has over 30 years of professional fire suppression experience. Luis earned an Associate’s Degree University of Phoenix as well as from the North Dakota School of Science in Fire Science and is completing a Business / Marketing Degree at Bloomsburg University.

Luis served in the USAF Fire Department from 1981 to 1985 and has worked through an increasingly responsible series of positions since 1985 with Ansul and with Fire Equipment Distributors working with special hazard fire suppression systems design, service & installations, contract sales & project management.  At Ansul/Tyco, he served as the District Manager for Standard Products, Foam and finally Engineered Systems for the Northeastern US and provided certification and training to Fire Equipment Distributors across Ansul’s product lines. He was the NYC Licensed Master Fire Suppression with SimplexGrinnell and most recently owned a Fire Suppression company before deciding to join 3M.  Luis is an active member of the Fire Suppression System Association, approved under AIA to provide continuing education courses and is part of a global team that is responsible for 3M's Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid business with a focus on the US.

This course examines clean agents available for fire suppression. Clean agents are utilized when damage and destruction to business equipment and operations from water based fire systems is unacceptable. The agents reviewed are replacements for the traditional halon fire suppression applications. Recent new developments in the industry allow for greater sustainability and safety. The course highlights differences in the performance, safety and environmental characteristics of clean agents.
Learning objectives include:
  • Understand the history and use of NFPA 2001-the recognized "Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems" and why it was developed to protect the environment.
  • Learn how clean agent fire protection may be used in projects to eliminate ozone depletion potential, lower global warming potential, conserve water in specific regions, and work within current and foreseeable global environmental regulation. Discover how to use clean agent fire suppression to satisfy USGBC LEED pre-requisites and credits.
  • Gain an understanding of how these environmentally sound clean agents impact safety margins and new developments in HVAC design.

Research Promotion Update...

As the 2014/2015 Research Promotion (RP) Chair, I would first like to thank all of our chapter members who have contributed to ASHRAE Research Promotion in the past.  Our goal this year is $15,300!  It’s one of those big hairy audacious goals as our total last year was $6,254. However, we have raised $16,226 in the 2011/2012 campaign, so I have faith that we will get to our goal this year.  It will take every member of our chapter contributing what they can, to make this goal!  I will be reaching out to ALL of you this year and we may even look at having some sort of fundraiser to benefit RP(For those of you who like to shoot, it may involve guns)  Thank you in advance for your support!

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ASHRAE RESEARCH PROMOTION
1.    There are 4 separate areas that RP dollars help to fund:
       a.    Research
       b.    Education (ASHRAE Learning Institute)
       c.    ASHRAE Foundation (Research Endowed Funds)
       d.    General Fund(Contributions support special Board approved projects)
2.    Unlike many non-profits (or not-for-profit) organizations, 100% of RP dollars go directly to research (not a portion, for example you’ve heard $0.92 of every dollar you give goes to….)

ASHRAE/IES Proposes Expansion Of Climate Zones For Energy Standard

New proposed climate data could make the ASHRAE/IES energy standard more applicable for global use.

Addendum w is one of 10 proposed addenda to ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2013,Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, open for public comment starting Dec. 5, 2014. The proposed addendum closes for review Jan. 19, 2015. To comment or learn more, visit www.ashrae.org/publicreviews.

The addendum was developed in response to an update of ASHRAE Standard 169-2013,Climatic Data for Building Design Standards, which now contains updated climate data and additional Climate Zone 0 with humid (0A) and dry (0B) zones.  Addendum w adds this climate zone to 90.1, This has global implications for the standard as Climate Zone 0 does not exist in the United States and is primarily used in the equatorial regions of South America, Africa, Middle East, southern Asia and the south Pacific.

“It gives the standard more of an international view with maps and data never before available to users,” Dru Crawley, chair of the Standard 169 committee, said. “Previously there was the single U.S. map.  Now there are high-level (1 deg latitude/longitude) maps of the world, covering each continent and major countries.”

Other addenda open for public review from Dec. 5, 2014, until Jan. 4, 2015 are:
  • v revises fenestration orientation requirements
  • y adds a new approach to simplified building lighting
  • z clarifies and modifies the modeling of a baseline HVAC system with air source heat pumps and electric auxiliary heat
  • aa clarifies an exception in  a table in the design model section
  • ad revises the preheat coil requirement for the baseline building model in Appendix G
  • ae updates a section related to definitions used with motors
  • af restores the specification of the rating conditioners for measuring efficiency of heat pump pool heaters
  • ag limits mechanical cooling for vestibules
  • ah clarifies lighting requirements

Chicago Releases Data on First Year of Benchmarking

The City of Chicago released its first-ever energy benchmarking report from data collected under the Energy Benchmarking Ordinance. The 2014 City of Chicago Building Energy Benchmarking Report finds millions of dollars in savings are possible in the city’s largest nonresidential buildings. The findings are based on the first set of benchmarking data from 2013, provided by building owners and managers (or their representatives) who have measured, verified, and reported their energy usage.

The citywide effort included 348 of Chicago’s largest buildings, representing 260 million square feet of space and approximately 11% of citywide energy use in buildings. According to the ordinance, municipal and commercial buildings 250,000 square feet and over were required to comply by June 1, 2014; the overall compliance rate was over 90%.

Next year, residential buildings over 250,000 square feet and commercial buildings from 50,000 to 250,000 square feet will be phased in and will benchmark, verify, and report their energy use by June 1, 2015. All buildings that reported in 2014 will benchmark and report by June 1, 2015, but are not required to verify data again until 2017.

Professionals certified by ASHRAE as Building Energy Assessment Professionals (BEAP) were included as approved providers for this new service. Information on this ASHRAE certification can be found at www.ashrae.org/BEAP
