Notes from the Field #7

The Leighton Photography & Imaging Monthly Newsletter

It's 2015 already! Whew - that went fast! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and New Year's celebration. It's been a wildly busy month here at Leighton Photography & Imaging. November was our busiest month to date in the ten years we've been open, and December just blew that record out of the water. I only managed to get a couple of sets of new images out via blog posts, and didn't really have time for much sleep (if any) at all!

Because of this steady but upswing in business, it looks like 2015 is the year I open my first studio. If you've been following me on social media, I've been quietly talking about it for some time, but 2015 is the year I make it a reality. Hauling studio equipment from location to location all over the greater Seattle area is getting more than a little tiresome.

I do want to mention briefly in closing how happy I was that so many people used our December coupon code this past month to order prints for Christmas gifts, etc. One of the strangest questions I regularly get from people is, "I love your photography. Do you sell prints?" Of course we do... that's how we pay our bills and keep a roof over our head! Thanks again to all the people who ordered or downloaded from us. I've included a new coupon for the month of January lower in the this newsletter.

That said, best of luck to everyone and here's to a rockin' 2015!

Rockin' 2015!

One of the things I really wanted to use this newsletter for was have it be a place where I could give out coupons for any of the images in my photo galleries that aren't available to the general public, as a way of saying thank you for subscribing to this newsletter and a way of saying thank you to everyone for all of their support over the past ten+ years Leighton Photography & Imaging has been in business. All sales help in opening our new studio!!!

Corvids are one of the world's smartest birds. These include ravens, crows, jays and magpies. In fact, the American crow can not only recognize and remember a human's face, but can teach other crows to recognize a specific person they haven't seen before.

Bighorn sheep were once widespread throughout western North America. By the 1920’s, bighorn sheep were eliminated from Washington, Oregon, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and part of Mexico. Today, populations have been re-established through transplanting sheep from healthy populations into vacant places.

The Apalachicola National Forest is the largest national forest in Florida and has some very interesting plant communities. While most of it is pine scrub with very sandy soils and numerous sink holes, it is very well known for its seepage bogs that contain massive numbers of rare pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants, as well as many species of native orchids.

Worker honey bees have a ring of iron oxide ("magnetite") in their abdomens that may be used to detect magnetic fields. They may use this ability to detect changes in the earth's magnetic field and use it for navigation.

The specialized hairs on the claws of scorpions are so sensitive they can detect air moving at only 0.072 km/hr. This helps them find their prey on the darkest of nights.

Thanks for taking the time to subscribe and check out my newsletter! If you like what you see, please share with those who you think would be interested. Sharing ultimately helps me find more clients and buyers, which in turn keeps this newsletter (and my website and blog) 100% ad-free. Nobody likes seeing that stuff, and neither do I.

Thanks again and see you in February with Notes from the Field #8!
