Winter Programs

Winter days can be short, dark and cold, but things are lively at the Library! Stretch out your day with a Night at the Library: Mysteries & Mayhem on Friday, January 23. Young detectives (8 – 12 years) will have a mystery to solve. Brighten your outlook with creativity on Saturday, January 24 with Make Something Day. Warm up with Hearts and Hugs on Saturday, February 7. A special Valentine story time will provide stories and activities for adults and their 3 – 6 year olds. Help some other creatures through the winter by making a unique bird feeder to celebrate National Bird Feeding Month on Monday, February 16. We also have Crayon Crew on Saturday, January 31, PJ Theater on Wednesday, February 4, Little Foodies making love potions on Wednesday, February 11, and some robot science for Beaker Buddies on Tuesday, February 17. Unwind Afterschool Yoga will be available for 5 – 12 year olds, inclusive of children with special needs. Check the Youth Room calendar for registration information.

Did You Know? LEGO

The popular interlocking construction toys originated with wooden toys made by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, whose company was named LEGO from the Danish leg godt, or, "play well".  As of 2013, approximately 560 billion LEGO parts had been made.

Every month our creative young LEGO Club members listen to a story for inspiration, then commence with the construction. The results are on display behind the Youth Services reference desk until the next month’s event. Builders, architects, and engineers aged 6 and up are invited to join us. LEGO Club is scheduled for Saturday, January 17 (dragons) and Monday, February 2 (sports).  Registration is not required for this program.

Meet the Youth Staff

My name is Jordan Tolmie and I am the new page in the Youth Department. I'm 22 years old and a recent graduate of Oakland Community College, having earned my associates degree in the Library Technician program. Ever since I was little, I have loved going to the library. I had always wondered how the "magic" of checking in and out books happened. I love to read in my spare time and also like listening to music and watching movies. I may be quiet and shy at first but will eventually talk for hours on end. I hope to continue my education and possibly work in museums and archives with some history background.

Jordan RECOMMENDS:

J FICTION AME         American Girl collections, various authors.
I loved how these books taught me a lesson in history and different time periods, making it fun with a girl my age in the story.

J FICTION OSB         Magic Tree House series, by Mary Pope Osborne.
I have always loved the different adventures the kids go on . . . I mean a magical tree house --  enough said!

J FICTION ROW        Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling.
Best ever! The magical place of Hogwarts and the characters seem as if they are so real.
