Acacia Joinery features at Quorrobolong House

In the heart of the lower Hunter Valley, lies a bird like, semi cantilevered majestic house. Featuring state of the art engineering, designed to stand against potential subsidence, resulting from the extraction of the Hunter Valleys rich resources.

An extraordinary challenge confronted Fergus Scott when asked to design a house in an area marked for possible mine subsidence. A vast majority of land in the lower Hunter Valley region has been pronounced as an area in which mine subsidence may occur. To meet this obstruction, Fergus Scott designed a subtle, yet effectively engineered bird shaped house. His design consisted of a linear building pivoted from a fixed point at the centre of the house, the area used as an open planned kitchen and dining area. Remarkably this was the only section of the house with its structure securely fastened to the ground.
From this pivotal point, two wings smoothly hovered above the ground held up by concrete pylons. To the West are the expansive guest rooms and to the East lies the Master lodging. Both wings were skillfully designed to allow for easy adjustments through the placement or replacement of steel shims at the top of each pylon.
The aesthetically pleasing nature of Fergus Scott's subtle, yet ingenious design;  the polished concrete walls, contrasted against the rustic Jarrah timbers by Acacia Joinery, provides an inspiration for today's designers.
The effortless flow of large Acacia Jarrah sliding windows and doors in the living, dining and kitchen spaces effectively balances panoramic southern views, and exploits the northern sun in the cooler months of the year.
