New Bible Study to begin on January 27

During Lent all are invited to be part of Exploring the Bible, a series of three six-week-courses designed to promote biblical literacy. Exploring the Bible is published by the Massachusetts Bible Society and is available in regular, Large Print and kindle editions. The first course is What Is the Bible? On the back page of the book these questions are listed:

How well do you know the Bible?
Do you know the stories?
Do you know how the Bible is organized and how those texts were chosen?
Have you ever thought about all the different ways people approach the Bible and decided for yourself what to think?

If you said “no” to any of these questions, you need What Is the Bible?

Tuesday January 27, at 7:00 pm to watch the video One Book Many Voices, also from the Massachusetts Bible Society. The video and discussion will only take about an hour and may assist you in making your decision regarding the Lenten study. To make it more interesting, you are invited to join us for dinner at the Cornerstone Restaurant at 5:30 pm. It is $5.00 hamburger night. Of late I have been seeing many of our parishioners taking advantage of this great deal and night out. Please join us for the study or the dinner fellowship, hopefully both.

Idol Making

“You shall not make for yourself an idol . . . in the form of anything that is on the earth.” - Exodus 20:4

Last fall I went for a run. On my street the leaves formed a canopy. Red, brown, some still green, a shield and a prism illuminating the street in a thousand different shades of orange glow.

The beauty nearly undid me.

And then the smell of exhaust was in my nose and a car horn went off angrily. I had run off the side street into one of Chicago’s busiest thoroughfares. I jumped back onto the sidewalk. My transcendent moment collapsed.

But I wanted to preserve it.  So at bedtime I told my kids, “Earlier today I saw God in the way the sunlight came breaking through the same leaves that held it back.” They were startled. I was pleased. Maybe they’ll start looking at the trees more carefully, more wonderfully. That’s good parenting! That’s good spirituality! I felt smug.

And then I felt awful. Because, deep down I knew I wasn’t telling the truth. Indeed, I’m afraid I hinted at an arrogant, even dangerous false religion.

First, equating God with an appreciation for nature risks suggesting that those who cannot afford leafy tree-lined streets don’t have equal access to the divine. Less than two miles from my house there are kids running down the street in order to dodge bullets, not peep leaves.

Second, to say that God is found in nature is to conflate the Creator with creation. Nobody says that “Starry Night” is Van Gogh. So why are so we so quick to make a similar claim about God?

It should be more than sufficient to say that I saw something beautiful. Beauty is rare enough. I don’t need to try and make a god out of it.

Prayer

Oh God, we long for you. Satisfy that longing so that we can stop trying to satisfy it on our own. Amen.

A Pastoral Letter On Racism: A New Awakening

January 16, 2015

As America honors the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the ideals ofequality, service and beloved community that he lived and died for, the Cleveland-based United Church of Christ has released a Pastoral Letter on Racism, with the hope and expectation that it will be read in our 5,100 churches nationwide on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend or to conclude the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity on Sunday, Jan. 25.

With the recent rash of deaths of African Americans at hands of police, the UCC national leaders hope Martin Luther King weekend will be an opportunity for us to both address those issues through our continuing advocacy and hope for change toward King's beloved community.

Here is the text of that letter:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the United Church of Christ,

As the liturgical season turns to Epiphany and our national calendar turns to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we are aware of our profound need for a new awakening of understanding about race and racism in our midst. As a church of Jesus Christ, we pray that the Holy Spirit will illuminate our hearts and minds and stir us into faithful response to the ongoing manifestation of racism which is evident in tragic and painful ways in our communities.

Born in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement and having deep roots in the 19th century struggle to abolish slavery, the United Church of Christ has a lasting engagement in the struggle for racial justice.
