7th-12th Grade Youth

Meet tonight at 7pm at Church.

Sunday, February 1

Did you know that Souper Bowl of Caring began right here in Columbia at Spring Valley Presbyterian in 1990?  That one idea has now spread across the country and raised nearly $90 million dollars for local charities to feed the hungry!  See www.souperbowl.org.  Our youth will once again sell soup for our Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, Feb. 1st.  We will have soup available for pick up and take out after the 8:15am service and Sunday School.  There will be "eat in" and/or take out available after 10:45am service.  Cost is $3 a bowl, includes soup and crackers. Soups include chicken noodle, vegetable, vegetable beef, taco, broccoli cheese and potato cheese.   All proceeds go to God’s Storehouse that serves persons in our Northeast Columbia community. Youth will also collect coins and dollars in big soup pots after both services for God's Storehouse! Please contact Laura Dunklin if you are willing to donate a pot of soup to this endeavor!

TELS (Traveling Evangels of Living Springs)

Thursday, February 12

The Traveling Evangels will visit the State Capital and the Mast General Store on Thursday, February 12.  Both the House & Senate are in session.  After lunch, we will visit the Mast General Store on Main Street (bring funds – there are a lot of neat things).  The bus will depart at 10 am from the LS parking lot and we should be back by 2:30-3 pm.  Contact Beverly Hoppert for information.

Saturday, January 31

We continue to form our Lutheran Men’s circle of prayer where each man is praying for a brother in Christ. Next breakfast gathering will be Saturday, January 31st at 8:00 am at Living Springs. Meal is being served by Laura Cunningham, LS Food Resource Person.  She will be serving coffee, buttermilk pancakes, grits, sausage, and scrambled eggs @ $7.00 per person. We will be discussing our upcoming events. We meet on the last Saturday of each month.  Contact Bob Turnmire at 803-513-7533.

LADIES BOOK CLUB

Monday, February 2

Our kick-off meeting will be Monday, Feb. 2 @ 7 pm.  At this gathering we discuss what books we will read in 2015 and schedule future get-togethers.  Typically we meet on a Monday night seven times a year – someone volunteers to host at their home and another brings snacks or dessert to share.  February 2, will be at Karen Kranz’ home @ 235 Founders Ridge Rd. (Summit development). Ph: 699-9566.  The book we will be discussing is Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good by Jan Karon – please feel free to join us and bring a friend.

SCOUT SUNDAY

Sunday, February 8

We invite all scouts, both male and female, no matter your age--to participate in our Scout Sunday on Feb. 8th at the 10:45AM worship service. Living Springs is hosting Scout Sunday again for the entire Northeast Columbia area. Please dress in your uniform and wear your emblems/pins on this day!

March for Meals 2015 - The Wild Run!

Your registration fee for this event will provide meals to seniors in need within our community through our Meals On Wheels and congregate meals programs. More importantly, this annual event helps us raise awareness of senior hunger in our community. This year's 5K will be held February 21, 2015, at Timmerman Trail in Cayce, SC – start is 9 am.  Registration fee is $35 runners, $30 walkers, $15 for children under 12 (save $5 if you register before Feb. 7).  If you would like to run/walk as a group, contact Karen Kranz or online registration can be found at www.seniorresourcesinc.org under events.

Lessons

First Reading: Jonah 3:1–5, 10

The book of Jonah is a comedy starring a reluctant prophet who is given a one-sentence message: Nineveh will be destroyed in forty days. Much to Jonah's dismay, the people of Nineveh repent. The point of the story is to get the reader to wrestle with the question "On whom should God have mercy?"

Psalm (ELW): Psalm 62:5–12

God alone is my rock and my salvation. (Ps. 62:6)

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29–31

Paul does not disapprove of marriage or other human social institutions. He does, however, want Christians to live in the present in fervent anticipation of God's future, which even now has dawned through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Mark 1:14–20

Before Jesus calls his first disciples, he proclaims a message that becomes known as "the gospel" or good news from God. God is ready to rule our lives. Those who realize this will respond with repentance and faith.
