The Next Adventure

February 2015

Dear Family and Friends,

The precipitation falling as I write this in Michigan is a little different than what is falling in Zambia right now.  Winter in the U.S.--rainy season in Zambia.  I will admit to being one of the few people enjoying the snow.  I am now in my second month of itineration.  I received my official appointment to full time missions in October 2014.  I am excited to head back to Zambia once I raise my funds and pass my pediatric boards-hopefully early 2016.   It has been a joy to share with several of my supporting churches all that God did last year.  I am also back in the groove, working part time in my clinic.  I enjoy sharing snippets of stories to my patients and parents curious about what Dr. Marten did while she was away in Africa.  (and no, I didn't treat anyone with ebola...though if God released me to while I work, I surely would)
As I plan my many activities, God keeps bringing John 15 to me in books, sermons and devotions.  During this time of Lent is a good time to reflect on His words to His followers as the time of His death grew close.  Certain words repeat themselves in the chapter.  Abide. Obey. Love. Fruit.  I love vs 11 where following His commands is not drudgery or harsh but brings joy.  The whole chapter is meaningful,  but the other verse that stands out to me is vs 16- "You did not choose me but I chose you.  And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask Him in My name."  I pray each of us understand the depth of love in His choice of each one of us.
Thank you all so much for your sacrificial giving to support me.    Thank you for all the prayers as I have so much to learn in this season.  I am open for invitations to speak at your church, small group, children's ministries, youth group or other creative get-together.  Quick budget details:  I have 100% of my cash budget of $12,000 raised!  I have $1,018 pledged monthly towards my $6,044 monthly budget.  Thank you for all who commit their money and time of prayer for me.  I appreciate the body of Christ working together to reach those who need Him.

His blessed servant,

Heather Marten, MD
