Do you remember Silver Spring before it was the cultural destination and civic hub it is today? Among several strategies that contributed to the revitalization of Downtown Silver Spring was its designation as an Arts and Entertainment District fifteen years ago.

With the recent allocation of funds by Montgomery County for cultural regranting in Wheaton, MD, AHCMC has the opportunity to support artists and cultural nonprofits in a community that is home to the County's youngest AED. We are truly excited about the FY15 Wheaton Cultural Grants, and invite you to review the Official Guidelines for this opportunity.

The FY15 Wheaton Cultural Grants increase our capacity building offerings to you, and given the great diversity that we see in Wheaton, also helps us to advance a very important conversation about inclusion and equity in the arts. We have shared some of what we've learned from our conversations with you and our colleagues in Wheaton on our blog, Check it out, and as always, share your thoughts with us.

W
e look forward to hearing from you about how the arts and humanities can best serve communities in Wheaton, and around the County.

Warmly,

Suzan Jenkins, CEO
Arts & Humanities Council

A Red Orchard Wall for Silver Spring's Fenton Street Urban Park

After issuing a Request for Design Qualifications to the public in October, The Public Arts Trust and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County are pleased to announce the selection of an outstanding public art proposal for the Silver Spring/Takoma Park community.

"Red Orchard Wall" by DC-based artist Michael Enn Sirvet is a contemporary outdoor sculpture whose design is inspired by the history of the Fenton Street Urban Park’s as a former apple orchard.  The “curving wall” sculpture, approximately ten feet in height and twelve in length, is expected to be installed at the intersection of Fenton Street and Philadelphia Avenue in summer 2015.

“In choosing to tell the story of the long-gone apple orchard, we have decided to interpret the idea of an apple orchard in a contemporary way,” says Sirvet. “We do this to compliment the new, vibrant and modern nature of downtown Silver Spring, with its many newly constructed buildings and public areas. Modern Silver Spring demands cutting-edge contemporary sculpture to match its contemporary growth.”
