Just A Heads Up...

SNIPPETS ON SELAS
SELAS Logo Horiz no text.png
In December, advisories planned and worked together to add some holiday spirit to CHMS by decorating their classroom doors using winter themes. This is an annual contest sponsored by the CHMS Peer Leaders. The winners of the contest this year were the advisories of Mrs. Wilton/Ms. Julkowski, Mrs. Guerin, and Ms. Steinhebel. The door-decorating contest encourages each advisory to work as a team to create inspired doors.

School-wide, students are working on reviewing their Infinite Campus/Student Portal login information and setting goals in advisory in the month of January.  We hope this will help empower students to make good choices independently and take ownership for their school responsibilities. The close of January marks our district-wide SELAS (Social-Emotional Learning for Academic Success) week. To highlight and celebrate the importance of SELAS at CHMS during this week, students will work on writing letters of support to various causes, reflect on why they are proud to be members of the CHMS community, and participate in a Spirit Day wearing blue and gold.

Geography Bee

All CHMS students started the new year off by participating in the National Geographic geography bee.  It culminated with an all school assembly geography bee featuring 10 finalists:
6th graders:  Michael C., Emilio D.
7th graders:  Connor B., Leon K., Ava N., Sam R., Genny H.
8th graders:  Daren C., James G., Nick S.
Congratulations to the two finalists Nick S. & Sam R., and to our school champion Nick S. He will take a written test to qualify for the Illinois State Geography Bee which is one step closer to the national bee in Washington, D.C. Good luck Nick!

Community Engagement Thursday

You're invited to attend a community engagement talk this Thursday, January 22nd at 7pm at Walker Elementary School.  Over the past couple of years there have been many changes made in the district that affect the education of our children. School District 181 Superintendent Dr. Don White and Assistant Superintendent of Learning Dr. Kurt Schneider will present an overview on the changes that have been made, the factors that were responsible for driving these changes and what we can expect in the years to come.  Topics of discussion will include:
- What is Learning for All?
- Where are we today, 1 1/2 years into the Learning for All plan?
- Differentiation and how it is beneficial to all learners
- Recommendation for new math materials and how they tie into Learning for All
- Recommendation for the Digital Learning Initiative and how it ties into Learning for All
We hope that you are able to take advantage of this great opportunity to hear from Dr. White and Dr. Schneider directly on these very important topics.

Your student could win a $20 gift card to The Daily Scoop by turning in Box Tops by February 1st!  Students should turn in Box Tops in an envelope or bag marked with their name to get credit and drop them in the box in the main office.  Those little Box Tops add up to BIG money for CHMS so thanks for your support!

Vern Goers Thank You!

Vern Goers Greenhouse, Inc

Please Complete the Illinois 5Essentials Survey

We are joining districts throughout the state in administering the Illinois 5Essentials Survey now through March 13th. District 181 teachers, middle school students, and parents are being invited to take the 15-minute survey to help identify strengths and areas for improvement in our schools’ climate and learning conditions. At least 20% of CHMS parents must complete the survey for the school to receive a report on the data, so it is important that we have strong participation. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. The direct link to access the survey online is https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois-pilot. You can read more about the five essentials, access the survey link, and download past results on our website: www.d181.org > Resources > IL 5Essentials
