It's our 25th Anniversary!
Welcome to People Express' first newsletter of 2015. We are very excited, as 2015 marks 25 years of People Express. We will be celebrating this exciting anniversary by revisiting People Express' very first project 'Stitches in Time' which explored the identities of villages in South Derbyshire with the creation of community tapestries. Throughout 2015, we will be returning each banner to the village that made it and forming community panels, developing new creative projects with that community. This will contribute to our new aim of every single person in South Derbyshire having a creative project on their doorstep.
All of the tapestries can currently be viewed on display on the first floor of People Express' building, The Old Pressing Shop.
More information on our 25th Anniversary plans can be found on the People Express website.
The Big WELCOME Cafe
The Swadlincote Aspergers Society opened the doors of 'The Big WELCOME Cafe' for the first time in February. This pilot workshop, where participants got to try their hand at willow weaving and wood carving, will now go on to become a programme of weekly drop in creative-cafe style sessions.  Based at People Express' building, The Old Pressing Shop, the cafe will offer an opportunity for people living with disabilities, their friends and family to access fun, friendly, drop-in creative activities, with tea and biscuits. The weekly sessions will take place every Wednesday from 2-4pm, starting on 25th March. All activities and refreshments are free of charge. If you would like to be involved or would like more information please phone us on 01283 552962 or email kalila.storey@people-express.org.uk.
Reasons to Feel Good
People Express have recently been successful in securing funding from The People's Health Trust, to grow capacity in Swadlincote for creative digital access. The fund will be used to develop a 2 year programme led by young people living within certain postcodes in Swadlincote and Newhall. More information will be available soon. An article featured in the Burton Mail about the project can be found here.
Near Now
We have been selected by Know How, based at Broadway, Nottingham for their Near Now programme which works across the arts, culture and heritage sector to support organisations and individuals in finding meaningful ways of working with technology to increase their digital capacity and respond to the challenges and opportunities of the digital economy. This six month training programme will allow us to explore how we can work digitally to engage new participants and audiences whilst learning about new digital technologies. EMerge
Taking place on 14th February, 'Blind Date with the Arts' allowed young people to find out more about the different carreers in the arts. The event, held at the People Express building, saw young people aged 11-25 years taking part in music making, special effects make-up, and willow weaving workshops. The young people also took part in a special speed date style carreers discussion with different artists and art professionals. The day was funded by The Mighty Creatives, as part of the EMerge day which had 23 different events taking place across the region on the same day.
Pupils 'Explore' Classical Music and Dance with BBC Ten Pieces
People Express hosted a group of pupils from Pennine Way Junior Academy over two days in January, offering the opportunity to take part in Composing Music  and Street Dance workshops, using classical music from the BBC Ten Pieces selection as a stimulus. People Express, a champion for the national project, also provided the opportunity for the young people to achieve an Explore level Arts Award. The folders created have been recently moderated and we are thrilled that all pupils were successful in achieving their certificates. A celebration event of the young peoples' achievements will take place in the Spring.
Arts Award
People Express has been busy working with two groups of young people to achieve their Bronze level Arts Award. A group of young men worked with Filmmaker Gillian Bates from the Can-do Film Festival to make a film in a day, learning to film and edit on an iPad.
Another group worked with us over 2 days during the February half-term, taking part in a willow weaving workshop and visiting a ceramic exhibition at Sharpe's Pottery.
